Spay AND going back to work I just called and made Lily's appointment to be spayed. I originally wanted to have her done on a Friday if possible because I'm going back to work this week (summer's over! :( I'm a teacher), but of the two doctors at the vet I use, one is going out on maternity leave and they're only doing surgeries twice a week now--so Lily's appointment is for this Wednesday. Oh boy. So of course I'm a bit concerned. My husband will take her in on Wednesday morning at about 8:00 and they'll do her surgery first thing. They'll monitor her all day long and then we can pick her up around 5:30 that afternoon. I'm worried though that the next morning I'll have to leave her crated because we'll both be off to work. I know she just sleeps all day while we're gone, so do you think she'll be okay? I've heard I can buy a baby onesie to keep her from her incision.... what size do I get? OR.... do you think I should reschedule the spay for next week and see if my husband can get a day off work to stay home with her? Any other advice or comforting thoughts are welcomed... I know I'm going to be a nervous wreck. |

Thanks Marci. :) You know, you just gave me an idea. My mother in law is at home during the day--I could call her and see if she would come over to watch Lily. I'm sure she would love to come take care of her grandpuppy! :p I know with this week being just an inservice week I can sneak home some after meetings and nobody would know the difference... but that definitely wouldn't work when the kids get back, so I'm thinking it might be better just to go ahead and have her done. I just called my husband too- he said he doesn't think he can get a day off right now. I hate that Lily wasn't old enough/big enough to do this during July, but oh well. |

Hopefully Lily will have an easy time like my Gracie did. She just wanted to sleep and cuddle for 2 days afterwards, then it was full steam ahead. :p But I would be like you and want someone to be there to keep an eye on her. If nothing more then just for cuddles, and who better to give out cuddles then your Gramma. ;) Gracie is 3 1/2 lbs and I bought the 0-3 month onesies. They were a little on the big side, I was really looking for the premies but couldn't find them. However, I didn't need them at all. Gracie didn't bother her stitches...it is much more fun to bother your brother! :D:D |

She should definately have someone there with her the day after surgery. I was really concerned about Ellie (I worry too much) and insisted that she was supervised until her stitches came out. I let her wear a onesie instead of an e-collar and she tried to get to her incision through the leg holes, especially when she was wearing a size that was too big for her. I would have been very nervous about her chewing her incision and I did not want to leave her in an e-collar alone. The night of her surgery day I stayed up with her and someone came over to watch her the next day while I took a nap. She just wanted to sleep and be with me (and eat:rolleyes:). |
I think having Grandma come would be great. I would be concerned that IF something went wrong no one would be there. Chamces are she will just sleep but you will feel better knowing she is not alone. I got premie onesies for Cali and she was about 3 1/2lb. Roxie is a bit bigger and will be spayed soon so I may get a preemie and a size up. I will keep Lily in my prayers for a safe spay. |
I have had a number of females spayed over the years and none of them have every had any problems. I never had to put onesies on them and none of them every bothered their incision. Your female will not be feeling very perky for a couple of days, she will want to sleep a lot and she may not eat as much. If she is used to being crated during the day then she should be just fine. If she is the active, always jumping around type of yorkie then I would be a little more concerned but otherwise I think she will be fine. I will be praying that all goes well with her spaying. |
Thank you, thank you, thank you all. You guys are GREAT. I'm feeling better already! :D Lily is about 6.5 pounds right now. Do you think that's probably the newborn size onesies? I'm going to go ahead and go get some today I think. Awwww... it's Lily's first clothes!!! :p |
The 0-3 months worked for Sammy and she is 6lbs so you're probably fine! I had to find a skinny one though. Most of them were too wide because they have to fit over big diapers. I found one that was a onesie and pants set and the onesie was much skinnier and that worked better! I got it at Carters. I would definitely have someone watch her. I had to hold Sammy for like 2 days because she was trying to get at her stitches and I felt bad and didn't want to put a cone on her so I just sat with her. All her grandma needs to do is make sure she doesn't bother her stitches and that she can go potty a couple times. Otherwise she will just sleep. You guys can watch her over the weekend and by Monday she will be feeling a LOT better. Also when Loki got neutered the Deramaxx gave him VERY bad diarrhea. Sam got Rimadyl and she was fine. Really I think she needed it for about 3-4 days and then she was wrestling with Loki so I think she felt better. :D |
