People scaring you away from buying a puppy
 
So i'm set on buying a yorkie..I've made an appointment with my breeder to come pick up the little one this coming saturday.

BUT..
people like my parents and friends keep going what if..this..and what if that...and i'm getting sort of paranoid now.

any advice? kind of like cold feet (but with the puppy) i guess.

Help!

what are they saying exactly? if you have certain questions or are wondering about certain things you should ask here to get some real answers

Are you worried about the breeder or are you getting nervous about caring for a puppy?

Puppies are an incredible amount of work, so maybe they just want to make sure you are prepared for what lies ahead! :)

I don't know which part you have concerns with.

1. Make sure the breeder is safe and trustworthy. I'm sure there are some good posts on that subject. I got my Yorkie from a great breeder, so I avoided that hassle.

2. Anybody can be raise a good Yorkie (even I can!) Just pay attention to the foods they can and cannot have. Reinforce good behavior - ignore bad behavior. Socialize them - let them meet new dogs. Give them time and attention. I'm sure there are really great posts one each of these subjects.

I'm sure you will make a great Yorkie owner!

When I got my two I hadn't had a puppy in years. I had totally forgotten how much work it was to have a puppy. They get into everything and require a lot of attention. You will need to puppy-proof your home to make sure there is nothing dangerous for your puppy. It took over a year for Daisy to be completely potty trained so we had a lot of 'accidents' in the house. I just want to warn you in case you have not had a puppy before.

I hope getting a puppy will be the right choice for you because in my mind you just can't beat having a Yorkie. But please give it a lot of thought first so you will not end up changing your mind and having to rehome the puppy. Good Luck!

Why do we ignore the bad behaviour .?.. I believe in positive reinforcement but still I say "no , bad " when the situation warrants it . Don't get me wrong , being positive is the way to go... . but bad is bad and I think they have to know we are displeased with certain things like chewing , housetraining , etc .unless Yorkies are diff then other dogs ...

Well, I guess you're right, I have a loud 'clap' that stops Marty from eating horse poop or barking - sometimes. When I want him to learn something new, I give him a treat for good behavior, its sometimes slow, but is the way to go. I have tried to ignore bad behavior and it is difficult - I'm told it works. The only instance where that really works for me is if he is wandering too far off trail - I will walk away from him and he will usually decide to come find me.

Congratulations!! I would just read everything you can on them, make sure your breeder is reputable, has a health guarantee and sends you home with instructions and the food the puppy is currently eating, have nutrical on hand and make sure you know the signs of hypoglycemia and be ready to treat immediatley if you see the signs. Make sure the puppy is eating frequenty. It's always good to have them seen asap by your vet. The best thing is to hope for the best but be prepared. If you start out with a helathy pup from a good breeder you should be fine. If I listened to my parents and friends I wouldn't have my 4 love of my lives!!! Yes they are work but to me they are worth it all.

You are making a (hopefully) fifteen year commitment to this puppy so make sure you are prepared. They are like infants for the first year with sleepless nights, having to puppy proof you house, etc. I don't know how old you are, but a dog does tie you down. You can't just pick up and go whenever you feel like it anymore.

A dog is a huge financial responsibility, too. Have you considered that? The first year is expensive and as they age they tend to really rack up the vet bills. Here is a good article on the cost of owning a dog:

I can tell you from personal experience that the breeder is very honest and down to earth and she cares very much about the breed both my to came from her and the 2 your looking at our Violetts brothers. they also share the same father. Below is a pic of there Father willo,Half brother Spanky. and full sister Violett
