Yorkie questions about a new pup
 

If a Yorkie is less than a pound at six weeks approximately how big will he be full grown? Is that very much for a six week old?

Also, is CKC comparable to AKC?

I believe the weight estimated chart most breeders use is to double the weight at age 12 weeks. That usually gives the mature weight.

I might be wrong in this though and appologize if so. I am going off memory on this.

That is correct Schazie. I was reading one of my books and that is what it said to do.

A lot also depends on genetics.. You need to know the weights of the parents and grandparents..
I've also heard you can tripple their 8 week weight for a gestimate too.

AKC only registers AKC dogs of the same breed.

CKC (Continental Kennel Club) will register mixed breed dogs, such as yorkie/poodle mix.

CKC (Canandian Kennel Club) is a registry very much the same as AKC..
The difference being the country.. Most likely you can change it to AKC if you move to the US

There is also IKC (Ireland Kennel Club).. If the pup is imported into the US can be switched to AKC.

I have heard the same thing regarding CKC registration. From what I have been told, AKC has very high standards to meet and it is not as easy to have a dog registered with them. Because of that, a lot of animals are being registered with CKC. But here again, I don't know that to be a fact; it is only what I have been told.

I dont really know if doubling the weight at 12 weeks always works:rolleyes: Lady was 8oz at 7 weeks and weighs in at 2lb´s 4 oz now at 14 months old.Jessie was 2lbs at 8 weeks old and weighs in at 8lb´s now at 9months old.

You are right.. The doubling 12 week doesn't always work.. Genetics plays a major factor here.

I'm not totaly sure about the weight thing......But you must look at mom / dad and genitics....My first Yorkie was tiny forever.....Then BAM!!! He was over 13 pounds.....A lot of that came from "table treats"...He was spoiled rotten.

On the AKC vs. CKC thing I know AKC has higher standards and only registers other AKC/ purebreed dogs....of the same breed. CKC will register puppies of 2 AKC dogs either same breed or mixed breeds. That is becoming a very popular activity in the breeding community (NOT EVERYBODY.....but several I have spoken with). It's called "designer dogs"....picking 2 breeds that are popular and mixing to get a certain puppy.
I have also talked with a few breeders...(not yorkie, but other breeds)...who say they are casual breeders with high standards for the breed, but are breeding occasionally for pets and AKC is rather expensive compared to CKC. One told me AKC required DNA verification on male dogs (or something like that)...

I have really enjoyed talking with everybody and I want to thank them for their input on my "potential puppy" issue. I have spent many hours the past few days on this keyboard and have to get back to my real life. I have some office work to get done and I am also writing a book.....don't ask me what it is about...it is a big secret.....I will tell more later. I think 6 weeks is to early to guess adult weight.

CKC (conkc) is a registry that will register any dog. The paper means nothing. If you say you have a Yorkie, send a picture with 2 signatures saying its a Yorkie they will paper it as a Yorkie. Why bother registering at all. The purpose of a registry is to be able to show the pure bloodline isn't it?

AKC is not that much in cost. Its a total of about $50 to register a litter. DNA is only required on males and only if you breed your male more than 3 times in a year, or 7 in his lifetime. Not a lot to ask I don't think. The only other registry I would use in the US is UKC (united kennel club). I don't because their shows are to far for me to go to.

hi!i am new here.i don't actually own a yorkie but i have some questions about them.first of all do they bark if they are left alone?because i will not be able to be home until 3:00 on monday through friday :( also is it easy to train them not to bark???please help! :D pink

Sometimes they will bark if they hear weird sounds and they are home alone. So it depends on what kind of place that you live whether your Yorkie will bother anyone around you or not. You can train them not to bark, but the training will take time as well.

I found this post through the search functions and have been wondering the same thing as the other posters about the CKC. Both of my Frankie's parents (Yorkies) are registered with the CKC. I am in the process of registering him with the CKC.

My question is what process would Frankie have to go through to be registered with the AKC (if possible at all)? Also, why do people register with the CKC if it really doesn't verify anything (what are the benefits)?

frankiesmommy: I think quite a few people think the CKC is not so reputable, the Continental Kennel Club that is, NOT the Canadian Kennel Club. Some people are able to get a better price if they have some kind of papers. Here's a site I found regarding them:
