At what age should a yorkie be fixed?

I need to know at what age should I get my little girl fixed? And, what precautions should I take with the surgery?

In one of my books it states that Yorkies should be spayed around 6 months to prevent any type of cancers. This should be done before she becomes in heat for the first time. To prevent this.

Be sure to talk to your vet as well and see if he/she is familar with spaying small dogs.
Isoflorane is the safest gas to use to put them under..

Be sure and ask what kind of anesthesia will be used! VERY IMPORTANT! It should be Isoflurene or Seveflurene. My vet waited until the adult eye teeth came in and had me call him immediately and set uop for the spaying and pulling the baby teeth at the same time. This is important because they have double teeth and causes alot of trouble. So ask about doing that at the same time and save her from under going anesthesia two times! Good Luck! I can guarantee you that you will be a nervous wreck. I took my baby home that night because I knew lthey would not watch her through the night like I would, I had to sign a paper, though . It was worth it!

Good idea about pulling the teeth at the same time.
They will probably want to do pre blood work too... they check for anything that might cause a problem when they put them under..
I'm sure they've told you this too.. Make sure she doesn't eat after midnight the night before the surgery.

I have just placed a call to my vet as Schatzie is going in for surgery this Friday morning. I wanted to know what kind of anesthesia she will be under as noted above, Isoflurene or Seveflurene. The vet needs to call me back as the front desk didn't know.

I've been a nervous wreck all week worried sick over her surgery.

She wont be spayed yet, having leg surgery but he says he can pull the stuck baby teeth while she is under. But spaying at the same time is too much.

Since they cannot eat anything after midnight is it ok to give them Nutrical in the am prior to her going in for surgery?? Or is this considered everything included on the list of "nothing my mouth after midnight"?

I'm not sure about the Nutrical... I would ask the vet..
Is she having knee surgery?

She has been diagnosed with Legges Perthes Disease (Articular Necrosis)...The onset is 5-8 months, hereditary, and high risk rate in Yorkies and other Terrier's. What this disease is is lack of blood flow to the top femoral bone. The bone dies off and becomes jagged and painful. She stopped using her left rear leg appx. 3 weeks ago. I could have taken her back to the breeder but not an option. I love her to death and the breeder in most cases probably would have had to put her down.

With proper care after surgery she should be good to go and this disease does not jump to the other hip. Most likely she will be arthritic when she is old. It's been a house full of bunched nerves around here, kinda sad. :(

good luck with the surgery and keep us posted. I'm hoping the breeder does the right thing and stops breeding the pair thats throwing that terrible thing.

I notified the breeder the day I found out Schatzie's diagnosis. She had never heard of such disease before. So, I explained to her what my vet told me and what I quickly learned doing research on the net about it.

I mainly informed her that we would keep her and fix her. I never asked about any such refunds or even help to pay for the surgery. I just didn't feel good about asking her for $$. I figured if she meant well she would have offered. Im probably all wrong in this as I am mainly speaking this from a "puppy buyers" point of view. I see the "breeder's point of view" towards this too. Her's as the breeder's would be I think 1) I have the option to return the pup for another pup or refund of money, 2) returned pup most likely would be put down as unable to breed, unable to sell as everybody wants a little pup, not enough room to have another house pet of her own as she has too many, etc. A breeder is in this as a business and I respect that. But I have been through 3 pups with 3 differant breeders within a year and have had bad luck all the way around....It's a pretty difficult situation as there are emotions involved being friends with two of the breeders.

Anyway, this subject is totally off the first post and I don't want to take away from her original question as that would be rude of me. I will start a thread the day of Schatzie's surgery to inform you asking her outcome.

You've been through 3 pups with 3 breeders in one year? That is just plain ridiculous! What is going on there? You must be just ready to go crazy! That is just awful! Like you said once they are in your homes, you don't want to send them back because of a medical problem because one gets attached to them so fast! I am so sorry for you. Let us know how she comes out tomorrow. It will be a stressful day for you. I still think you should ask for some restitution for the surgery from the breeder. All she can say is no. But I think it's worth a try. How much did you pay for her? I would try for half back at least. At any rate, good luck tomorrow and she will be in our prayers.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my "getting fixed" issue. I had heard through the grape vine that yorkies have a hard time with surgery, now I know why! Thanks so much for all of your information :-)
