How will they get along? Hi everyone, As usual I am here for some good advice and insight. My son is dropping his 3 year old 3.9 lb Yorkie Baxter off today for me to watch over the weekend while he goes camping. Barclay, my Yorkie is about 6 pounds 7mos old and still full of energy. Baxter tends to be more submissive and quiet and really doesn't want to play all that much. This will be my first experience with two dogs in the house. Barclay hasn't had a lot of exposure to other dogs, but when he does get the opportunity he is playful and a little on the rough side. Any suggestions on how to keep them occupied together, knowing they have different personalities and energy levels? Has anyone taken in a pet overnight or for a weekend to spend time with their Yorkie? If so, I would love to hear your experience. Especially with feeding and walking, yikes . . .I am going to have my hands full:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::p |
i hope someone can answer this for you...what i will recommend is if they have not meet then slowly introduce them...hehe...good luck! |
I guess I would put them together to see how they interact. Maybe the younger one, Barclay will act submissive to Baxter since he is so much younger. If things get rough, you can always separate them when you are not with them. Good luck! |
You're just going to have to watch them and see how they interact. It's possible Barclay could be jealous and a bit territorial when another one is brought in. Just keep an eye on them for awhile and hope for the best.:D |
I really doubt Barclay will have a problem with Baxter...it's likely to be the other way around. Understand at 3 years old...Baxter may not care too much for Barclay's puppyness. If he isn't interested in playing...he'll let him know. My Ramsey is three...she isn't always willing to play with Reggie who is 7 months. She plays with him on her terms...when she wants to. When necessary...I distract Reggie from bugging her. If they play well together...you won't have to occupy them at all...they'll do it themselves. If you have a yard...I really suggest taking them outside... to do "dog" things. All of mine follow each other around the yard... For feeding I suggestion two seperate bowls...not placed side by side...across a room. I walk three....best advice there...it helps if everyone is going in the same direction. |
My Baxter is 7 lbs. 7 months and has the temperament of your Barclay. (hoping he eventually calms down) We introduced him to my sister's dachsund on her territory and her hackles went up quick but she settled down soon and they get along great now. They are going to spend the weekend together this weekend while I am out of town. I would just watch them really closely. |
I think they will do fine. I have brought in 3 puppies(at different times) in the last 1 1/2 years and just brought the new one home and put them together and never had any problems. |
Thank you everyone for great ideas and suggestions. I plan to watch them closely. I agree that Barclay will probably want to run and play way more than Baxter, I think for that reason I will need to keep an eye on Baxter so he doesn't get too annoyed. I will take some pics this weekend and post them. Baxter is adorable. I have watched him many times, in fact he was my total inspiration to get a Yorkie of my own. Baxter is Baxter, quiet & submissive and Barclay is Barclay, loud, rambunchous and a ball of energy, but both have so much love in them. Keep the suggestions coming, I love this forum, I learn so much:animal36:animal-paWish me luck with my two boys!!!! |
Well a friend of mine came over with her two yorkies the other day one is a pup and the other one is a adult, my girls are very friendly to much sometimes specially here at home, what I did I just keep them in the playpen and after the excitement level goes down I let one by one out so they can smell each other, and do their doggy stutt:rolleyes: they all did great. Good luck to you hope everything work out find for you :xfingers: |
I mean there doggy stuff, for some reason I waited to long to correct that word mailman came over with a pkg for the girls:rolleyes:, anyway I really hope everything goes well can't wait for the pictures, oh one more thing just like Cesar Milan said watch your own energy around the dogs, a positive, assertive, calm energy is very important:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:thumbup: |
