Swimming So this new place just opened up here and it has a huge indoor pool for dogs. I took Jack there to swim for his first time. He just shook the entire time. I finally got him out into the water but he kept trying to head back to the stairs. After while I took him to the opposite side of the shallow end and he swam along the edge. He did this a few times but by the time he got to the stairs he was just whimpering to get out. I just praised him and praised him. Would have given him treats but they are not allowed in the pool area. I am wondering what everyone else's experience with swimming was. If I get him in the water more, will he eventually like swimming? |

Ummm.... he can stand on the step. Not in the shallow end. He has a life jacket to help him stay afloat. I let him sit on the step for a good 10 minutes with his jacket on to get use to the water. We are going to the lake a week from Saturday so I am hoping that when he sees my friends Chesapeak Bay mix swim, he will get the idea that it can be fun. After he gets use to the water, we plan on going out on a pontoon for awhile. I sure hope he likes swimming. It would give us another activity to do together. |
Mascot is 10 mths old and he goes boating at the lake with us. He loves to swim but it took him time and coaxing from me in the water for him to jump in. I didn't just put him in the water, I let it be his decision. I got in the lake and kept calling him and he whinned and whimpered and finally jumped. He does however wear a life jacket, so this may make him more brave. He will swim from my raft to my kids rafts to my husband and when we are on the boat he like the wind running through his hair. He is a regular water dog! |
See now Jack is afraid of heights. He will try and try to jump off the couches but he just won't do it no matter what we do to convince him to try. Hence why I would probably have to put him in the water because there is no way I can see him jumping off of the end of a boat if he can't even jump off the couch. Then again, he might follow Molly's lead. Guess we will have to wait and see. |
my girl reno loves, loves, loves the pool. we can't keep her out of it. my boy meaty wants nothing to do with it. i think they are like people in the way that they have likes and dislikes. |
well i haven't tried so i couldn't help you...hehe..but the story sounds so cute! |
awwwww he won't jump from the couch, I guess he may not want to jump from the boat then... Mascot does jump from the couch and up and down and on the chair. I hope he gets use to the water, it is alot of fun watching them swim and have fun in the water. My girlfriend has an Old English Bulldog and he swims like a rock, not very well at all. Maybe they all decide on their own if they like it or not.:) |

I will have them posted no later than sunday the 17th so watch my profile for them. I am excited to see how he does. I might bring him back to the pool a few more times to get him use to it. Maybe my friend Jenny will bring Molly over to the pool so Jack has someone to show him how. |
Neither one of my boys liked the pool at first...but I cuddled them really close to me and held them tight to make them feel secure. I talked really sweet to them and floated them around in the pool just as if I was training a baby to get used to the water. After I got them used to the water, I held their front paws and floated them around like they were babies. Then I taught them how to find the steps so they could get out. Now anytime I call them to the edge of the pool they willingly come to me to get in. They have a boogie board that they float around on and I pull them. They seem to like being in there now. You have to teach them to like the water. |
