Talking sense into hubby
 

Please guys, help me out here! I just got Tobey 3 days ago and he was taken away from momma way too early. The vet says he's really healthy and all is well there so far.

My problem is this..... I am having problems with the breeder, who is now saying that the parents' papers were lost, etc. etc...... and that she bought the parents off of someone else and can't remember what their registered names are...blah, blah, blah. Whatever!!! I don't really care because I bought Tobey to be my baby and a member of this family. Everyone, including the vet, who has seen him says he is definitely a purebred, but we all know that I'll probably never know for sure. Hopefully he'll grow to be the gorgeous little yorkie-bug of my dreams, but he's too young now to guess what he will look like. The parents definitely looked purebred to me, but I don't trust this woman now, so..... But now my husband, who is not much of a dog person and just humors me, has decided that I don't need to get Tobey nuetered........ he wants to stud him out! LOL I tried to explain to him that noone is going to pay to breed their dog to an unregistered little boy. So his next idea was for us to buy a female and breed them ourselves.

I know people around here would buy the pups just for pets, but that is so irresponsible, in my opinion! I mean, if Tobey IS purebred, I have no way of knowing what his lineage is..... what if I breed him to a relative? (Well, hubby is from WVA so he gets those jokes all of the time...lol) I'm not saying I would never in my life consider breeding dogs (never say never), I just don't think breeding this particular dog would be honorable.

So, all you breeders out there, please give your opinion....... I'll definitely print this out and leave it laying somewhere inconspicuous..... like on top of his razor! LOL

You are correct, you should not breed him for many different reasons. 1- you can not sell a dog as a pure breed if you don't have any proof, 2-I am guessing you don't know a lot about his genetic background if the breeder can't remember the registered names 3-Too much backyard breeding occurs now which is very damaging to the breed as a whole 4-If your hubby is not much a dog person he is not going to like the cost and effort it takes to welp and raise a litter of yorkies, plus what happens if you can not sell them. Are you will to raise them all yourself? They would be your responisbility. The list could go on and on, but the point is get him fixed!!

Studding them out is not very glamorous, and studs like to pee on everything. plus you are right no one is going to pay a stud fee for an unpapered dog because they would not be able to register the pups.

make him a happy content little guy and neuter him.

I've never bred myself, but I worked at a vet for years and I don't think hubby would ever be quite prepared for the trials and tribulations of breeding. But, of course, he's a man.... he'd never admit he didn't know what he was talking about! lol

I just want my baby to be my loving little companion, that's all. I've always wanted to try showing, but with two kids and my grandmother to take care of..... well, that's a dream for a differen't day. Maybe one of these days it'll happen, who knows. I just want to enjoy that spunky little yorkie personality!:D

Our neighbors didn't neuter their Sheltie until he developed prostrate problems and was dripping pee all over their house. It was a mess. Another thing you have to be very careful with, is that when there is a female in heat anywhere near you, he will go crazy, so to speak.:D He'll want to get out the door any chance he gets and find the female. Scary.

If Tobey is your dog, then the neutering should be your discission. Sounds to me like hubby thinks he is going to make a few quick bucks by breeding and I'm sorry, that is not the case at all. A lot of money goes into breeding if it's done correctly and you will be lucky to come out even.

Better tell hubby he needs to do some research before he jumps the guns!

Right you are there........ heck, I know TONS more than he does about dogs in general, and even Yorkies, but I would never get into breeding without TONS more knowledge!

He's so funny, though. He tries to act all big and bad...."He's YOUR dog, don't ask me to take care of it", etc etc.... then I catch him peeking in the crate to make sure Tobey is alright, or cuddling him when I'm not watching. lol I think he's just scared to death that if he acts like he likes dogs I will bring home a bazillion of them!:rolleyes:

My hubby will say he don't like "My" dogs, but I catch him baby talking to them and I have even caught him calling himself daddy!

But their "MY" dogs!

We have a mutt named Todd that I rescued two years ago and as soon as Todd was big enough to jump up, he started laying in the recliner with hubby. I always called him "Daddy's Dog" and would get an earful. But last year, Todd cut his leg (we never did find out what happened..vet said it didn't look like car or dog fight.) and my husband was a nervous wreck. He even took "MY" dog to the vet by himself (wow!) to get him checked out, and would help me rebandage his leg every day.

Tobey cuddled up next to him on the bed last night..... I think that was all it took!:)

I just don't get the breeding thing, though. :confused:
