Medium crate ok? I have a medium crate that is in amazing condition and I was wondering if you think it would be okay for my puppy or will the big space be overwhelming for him? I hate to not use is because it's in great condition but not at the cost of upsetting the puppy. I plan on getting one his size, I also have a pet taxi that was for my huge cat that would be a great size. Opinions anyone? TIA, I swear I am going to get thrown off these boards with my millions of questions. |
If you are planning to crate train your dog, you will have the best results in a crate that is big enough for him to stand up in and turn around. This will keep him from peeing in the spot unless he just can't possibly hold it another second. If the crate is too large the will pee on one side and sleep on the other. Some people suggest putting in boxes to make the crate smaller. We had a medium size crate for Joey, and we found that he would just pee on one side of it instead of holding it till morning. So we put him in a smaller carrier, and he would hold it long enough to wake me up and take him to a pee pad. In the mourning I would always take him outside. He never had any accidents in the small carrier. As he's gotten bigger he uses the bigger crate just as a place to get away from it all. |
If you are planning on crate training, you will want to block off part of the crate so your puppy has just enough room to turn around a lay down ... otherwise he will most likely soil the end of the crate then "escape" to the clean side. ;) I kind of went overboard preparing for my new baby and bought a HUGE crate off of ebay for my guy (not knowing at the time how little space he would actually require) ... it came with a partition that I've been using, and it works great. When I'm going to be out of the house for longer periods of time, I remove the partition and put a little box lined with a puppy pad at the other end so that he doesn't have to hold it for hours. It has worked wonderfully so far. If your crate doesn't come with a partition, you can fill up half of the crate with a cardboard box draped in towels. I hope it works out for you! |

When moved Layla to a larger crate and used a pillow and towels to make a smaller space and now that she can hold it all night she gets the whole crate. |
Our crate is bigger than the "recommended size" I would guess it is around a medium and we have never had any problems. When either one of them is confined to the crate they will not potty in there either, so we have never used a partition. |

Is the small carrier okay to crate him in, it's actually really not small for a small dog of his size he will have room to turn around in etc. would this be better for crate training. Maybe I will save the medium one for when he is fully potty trained. Come to think of it my golden was very small in the medium crate when I got her and it explains why she went on one side not the other. It wasnt' until the crate was an appropriate size for her and she got better house trained that she didn't have an accident in her crate. Thanks for all your input!!!! Glad I can't ask enough questions because believe me I'm sure I'll think of more in the next 4 weeks, lol. |
I knew nothing about crates when I got Bailey at 8 weeks of age. My boss at the time, gave me a large crate that she had used for a cocker spaniel. I put a pillow and little blanket in there. It worked fine and she never did her business in there. I used to call it my Yorkie Condo.:D |
My Scruffy is almost 2 years old and he has been potty trained for over 1.5 years. He uses his crate ONLY at bedtime, he has a medium size crate, and I have always partitioned off half with shoe boxes covered with a blanket. It's just always been that way, but my dh just suggested that we can probably take the boxes out now so that he gets the whole thing (it's probably twice his body size)...........do you think he will pee in the other half, or are we safe now that he is TOTALLY potty trained??? (sorry if this is such a naive question!!!!:idontknow) Thanks!! Heidi |
