Are yorkies good with lots of children? Hi! I'm new here and have been doing lots of research on what type of dog to get for our family. We have a large family with six children, ages 15,12,9 and 6 year old triplet girls. We had a sheltie that recently died and I think she was the best dog ever, but my older children and I would like a smaller dog that they could play around with as well as let sit on our laps and cuddle. If we got a yorkie, I would like to get a larger one, say about 10lbs. Do they often get that big? I was just wondering if they tend to like the commotion that goes on in a large family, as well as how aggressive they tend to be. Any information would be very helpful. This is a very long commitment and I want to make sure we get a breed that fits well with our family. Thankyou for your help! Dana |
Hello and welcome from one hoosier to another. I have two yorkies and a 5 year old and they do just fine with her. I can give you the name of a breeder if you want one. Her yorkies are average size though about 6-7 lbs. Chachi my male is 7 1/2 lbs. |
That would be great if you could email me the breeder info. Is that where you got your two yorkies? They are just adorable. Thanks for responding so soon. :) |
I'll Pm you the info. Yes its where I got both of my yorkies. She has lovely dogs. Shes in Berne Indiana which is near FT Wayne. |
Yorkie are great dogs, However with children, I would look for a larger yorkie, not a tiny! Good luck in your search! |
my family is my mom, dad, 18 yr old brother, 16 year old sister, me-13 tear old girl, and my little 4 year old sister. Rex is currently 9 lbs and he will probably be 10lbs . Rex is a Morkie (yorkie/maltese). good luck with your search. i agreee that you should look for a larger yorkie |
I think it just depends with what they are raised with. Becasue if they are used to a lot of comotion they probably won't have a problem with it. Charlie doesn't have much experience with littler kids, so he doesn't like them much. Good luck with your search! |
Wow-lot's of Indianaians (I don't like the word Hoosiers). :) I have 2 Yorkies (1 is small) and 2 kids. The boys are 11 and 7. The dogs are great with them. I think your kids are old enough for one. |
Welcome to YT! i think if i was going to get a yorkie with the size of your family i would def. look for a larger one! but they should do just fine! |
Hi Dana (again, lol!) Bo and I just wanted to welcome you to YorkieTalk. If you do decide on a yorkie you shouldn't have any problem finding one that will be a little bigger. And you and your family will wonder what you ever did without one! |
Hi welcome! I have 3 children ages 9, 14 and 15. I have 4 small dogs 2 yorkies and 2 chi chi's and they are great with my kids and my kids are VERY active. |
I have a 6 year old son and a very small yorkie. I think it is wise of you to consider a larger yorkie. Good luck in your search and I hope you find a doggie that makes your family as happy as our Chewy has made us :) |
Welcome, and I agree, it's how they are brought up. I have no kids, so Bailey is not used to that. The other day we went on a walk , and kids were having a BD party, well they all came running and petting him , well I could instantly tell he was nervous, and anxious,, he hid behind me inbetween my legs,,so we left, I didn't know how he'd react if they kept it up.. BUt he's not used to that. I think its how they are brought up. Good luck.. And yes, Bailey is between 10-12 pounds. |
Hi, My Dusty is a 17 month old female. We have 3 adults and 2 boys 12 & 9. We also have a lot of people over all the time. The only problem we've ever had it that Dusty thinks eveyone who walks thru the door is there for her. Seriously, Dusty was raised with these two active boys and she loves them and they love her. |
I have two kids 9 & 5, my five year old son is ADHD and (possibly bi polar-he's too young to test for sure I guess) He is great with Callie and she's still a puppy so she's still pretty little. I just told him over and over again until he could finish my sentences, that my puppy would be very small and he had to be soooo careful so he didn't hurt her. Like I said he's been great with her! |
No she didnt that I remember |
I have two children (ages 4 and 2) and our two yorkies are their best friends! of course, they are always supervised (because we all know that accidents can happen)....but I can honestly say I've had never had any problems. My yorkies are larger than some (12lb and 8lb). Good luck in your decision :) xxx |
I have to agree it would be better to get a bigger yorkie , my puppy is not frequently around small children, therefore she does not care for little kids. I do have a teenage daughter who is 13 her friends come and go often and Laci is fine with them!! Real small kids frighten my dog because of thier quick movements but that is because she is not exposed to them often! |
I have 4 children ages 10, 6, 4 and 3. My Fancy is a little girl weighing around 3 lbs and they are wonderful with her. They are always watched. I think since Fancy has been around them since she was 16 weeks that is all she knows so she is okay with kids. I think some older yorkies might have a harder time being around younger children if they were not raised with them at an early age. |
I have 3 kids ages 18,16, and 14. Diva is 5lbs and is currently 4 years old. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. Diva LOVES my teenagers and their friends. She seems to thrive on all the noise and extra hugs and kisses. My house is quite busy on weekends! She is also good with my 5 year old niece. We did, however, have to teach my niece the proper way to play with and love on Diva, and we never leave them unsupervised. I think a larger yorkie would be great for your family as long as it is socialized as a puppy around kids. (i.e. not sure about adopting an older dog as so many seem to suggest regularly.) Good luck with finding a breeder in your area. Can't wait to see you baby when you get him or her. Welcome to the YT family. |
Go for it! You are right to think about getting a larger one though. I know people with little yorkies where their yorkie has broken its leg just from jumping off of the couch! Buster & Bailey are so adventureous & playful, and my husband told me that it's a good thing they aren't smaller because we may have broken them by now (jokingly of course!). We expected them to be about 6 & 8 pounds full grown according to the vet & the breeder, but they are 10 & 13 pounds and we love every inch of them! I have no children, but Buster & Bailey are around kids all the time and LOVE all people, and all dogs for that matter. If they're around kids for long consecutive periods of time, I can see them looking at me like "come on, mom, can you make these kids go away now?" - but they've never once done anything mean or as much as growled at anyone & they're 11 months old now. I'm sure that if you decide to raise a pup in your home, it will be used to being around your family & love all of you!! |
I have one yorkie , Tia and she adores kids . I have no idea why. If she hears them she waggles her tail and pulls on the leash. I work with children and quite often I bump into them in my neighborhood and they fall in love with Tia and visa versa.Go for it. |
Mine is wonderful! We intentionally bought a little larger yorkie, for her safety! And, we socialized her from a tiny age to work well with lots of kids-she is in a dance studio a lot with almost 100 kids--and loves it. We have rules in order to protect her and not allow her to be injured. But, she loves the crowd! |

Bella Mia is not exposed to little kids often either. She doesnt seem to care for them especially since the puppies. Shes more "nippy". She nips at their hands when they come running at her. |
Jackson is 12.5 pounds and does very well w/ all the children that he knows. He lives with a 16 month old little girl and sees a 5 year old boy often. He LOVES them to pieces and they can do whatever they want to him and he doesn't care. He does, however, get nervous w/ a lot of kids around that he does not know. Not aggressive in any way, just nervous. |
I have two skin kids (5 and 4). We have two yorkies, a 3 pounder and a 5 pounder. We also have Dirty our 45 pound Boxer mix. Everyone gets along fabulous. Lexi our new girl (5 pounds) is much more outgoing and people loving than Lily but Lily is also good with the kids. She just has more of a reserved personality. |
