spin off cage dryers: I just visited a groomers today down the block from me and I looked at where they dry the dogs, It has crates, like regular kennel crates with air hoses hooked up to them. Do you think this is like the hazardous cage dryers? I mostly groom my golden except for when she has skin irritations and they use a crate with a regular fan blowing for her. Is that dangerous as well? I just want to have a groomer lined up for my yorkie when he is old enough to get groomed. |

I have a houseful of Yorkies. I have a crate that I put a pile of towels down in and when I have given the first dog a bath and toweled him/her off, I pop him/her into the crate and turn my blowdryer on. I make sure the blowdryer is far enough away that the dog can't be burned but yet close enough that the dog isn't cold. It varies by the dog. The smaller ones have to have the blowdryer closer to them. While that dog is drying, I wash another. Usually by the time the 2nd dog is washed, conditioned and rinsed, the first dog in the crate is ready to brush out. By the time the 3rd dog is washed, conditioned and rinsed the first dog is dry. Give a quick rebrush and that one is on it's way to playtime. It works kind of like an assembly line. Until I wear out. LOL I know you were asking about groomers but I thot maybe you would like to do the washing yourself. Then maybe they will charge less because they didn't bathe your baby. Sylvia |

I think there was a thread started recently on deaths caused by cage dryers. I guess it really depends but I think the groomer must use caution when using them and must watch them. (which I guess defeats the purpose and you may as well do it by hand.) |

I didn't see the segment on tv but I have heard some horror stories about dogs being burned by the blow dryers being too hot. Most of the professional groomers won't let me inspect their premises but some of them have the plate glass windows where I can watch. The dogs look like the blowdryers are very hot. I groom my own dogs and I know they are still at risk for being burned but the percentage is miniscule compared to the groomers business. Another thing is their toenails. When Pirogue was a young puppy, I took him to a groomer who worked out of her home and she not only cut one of his nails too short, she also cut one of his ears. I can not blame her for the cut on his ear because they will move at the wrong time. I have cut ears many times, I hate it but it happens. On the other hand, I can honestly say that I have never seriously cut a toenail too short. But Pirogue, now 4 yo, still has a fit when I try to trim his nails. I took one of my dogs to the vet to have the toenails trimmed, they also cut too short. I won't let anyone else do their nails from now on, so I have just decided to do it all myself. |
