RV trip with three yorkies! My friend and I are taking our first RV trip next week - and bringing our three Yorkies. Yikes! Any advice for first-timers? We use car seats in our cars. Do you use them in the RV? Three seats would take a lot of room. I'll be sleeping in the over-cab bunk. I'm nervous about one of my dogs falling out if they sleep with me. Maybe they just have to sleep on the floor or with my friend in the back bed. I'm terrified of them getting stolen so we're bringing all our food and such so we never have to leave them alone in the RV. Oh, and we're going to the mountains (Colorado), so I'm prepared to check for ticks! Any tips or advice would be appreciated! p.s. We'll be taking lots of pics. |
Aw that sounds so much fun, me an Bailey wanna come:p;)!! LOL have a lovely time :D:D:D:D |
You know, good luck and hope everything turns out great, but, I am paranoid about my dogs even riding in their car seats. Talk about a crazy mama!! But, I am so afraid of having a wreck and one or all of them get hurt or killed. The traffic here is horrible. My poor babies go to the vet and back and thats about it. Hope you have fun and no problems! |
A couple months ago, we took our RV out with all 5 of our yorkies! We have a bumper pull, so yes, they were all hooked up in the truck; some in carseats, the others with the seatbelt thingy. All went pretty well, a couple of the older ones did escape one morning while pottying, but, fortunately, since they were the older ones, they stayed close and they did come right back. We hooked 2 ex-pens together for them to play in, and kept their harnesses on with ID at all times. Don't forget to bring along nutrical, pepto, benedryl and hydrogen peroxide incase you need to induce vomiting. Also, be sure to have their shot records; some places require them. As for sleeping, they pretty much slept where ever they wanted to; mostly on top of me! Hope you have lots of fun! |
Linda already mentioned it. I was going to suggest a first-aid kit for both you and your yorkies! Have lots of fun and do be careful.:D |
Sounds like a great trip!! Enjoy!!! we RV, motorcycle and truck ALL the time,, and our girls LOVE IT!!!! you'll find your way with whats good and comfortable for everyone,, only one of our girls gets carsick,, Cerenia is a great carsick RX med,, but Bonine (human motion sickness medicine) works equally well and is MUCH cheaper ,, in case you need its inexpensive to keep for a just in case,, and as has been said,, have you a kit with necessities in it,, and I'd suggest a can of canned pumpkin to ease their tummies if need be,, Enjoy!!:) |
Carseats work well in an RV! That is what we use. IF you are traveling in an RV that has a booth-type table.... it will probably make into a bed (which would help solve the "over the cab" sleeping issue). X-pens are probably the best solution for a campsite. We use 2 hooked together and Shelby & Seymour LOVE IT. (you can set it up in the shade...or an umbrella hooked to the side of xpens works also.... and then kick back in your lawnchairs near the pen and enjoy your campsite!!!) Bring lots of drinking water for you and the dogs if you are camping primitive (no water at your campsite) Also, don't forget about TAGS on their collars....... best to have your CELLPHONE number on it.... no one can get ahold of you if you are not at home to answer your HOME NUMBER!! :p Camping is so much fun....... we love it!! Hope that you have a good time!! |
Sonds like your doing a good job of checking for everything Have a great time. ad maybe research the area for the nearest Vet just incase. |
You may want to read thru the Traveling w/ Yorkies Section HERE. I bet you can find a lot of helpful advice. Happy Traveling!!! |
Make sure you look up when leaving the RV for a potty break....I heard of someone on their way to Alaska and stepped out of their Rv and an eagle swooped it up off the leash !!! (not sure it that can happen, but check anyway) Things can happen real fast !!! Send DH out first !!! You never know !!! |
Aww how funnnn!!!! and i dont think they'll fall off the bed....just put them on the inside part :) |
Thanks everyone for the great tips. I especially like the suggestions for bringing an X-pen and the Bonine. Hadn't thought of those. As far as the bunk, I could sleep on the table bed instead. Was thinking the bunk would be a little more comfortable. I was also looking at those bed rails they sell at Target for kids beds, but I don't know if they'll attach to the bunk. This will be interesting because neither of us have traveled in an RV before. We'll post pics when we get back! |
be careful driving the rv there, small roads. have fun. |
The portable bed rail does fit in our RV bunk. The wood frame extends over the mattress to hold it in place, I just lift the mattress and put the rail under it. My DD is a wild sleeper and the rail holds her in :) Have a great time!! |
Oh, good to know that the bed rails will work! I'm more worried about one of mine trying to jump out, not so much falling out. |
Don't know if water has been mentioned, but I always use bottled water. Don't trust campsite water, even with a filter. Also, if you're going to the mountains, it might be chilly, don't forget t-shirts or sweaters. |
Update on the RV trip with 3 Yorkies Well the RV trip did not turn out so well. Let's just say it was a huge hassle and my friend and I had different ideas on what camping meant. Worst of all, the thing I feared most happened - Sampson fell out of the bunk! I can't even tell you how terrifying it was. I didn't see it happen but he sure cried! He was stunned, but not the least bit injured. Unbelievable! He's my athlete. He jumps off the back of the sofa every day and can hike 5 miles. He's a strong little guy for 6 pounds. I'm feeling terribly guilty for even trying to put my Yorkies in the bunk with me. I was just telling my friend that it wasn't going to work because they were too wound up and I was getting ready to put them down, when Sampson fell. I should have at least gotten the bed rails! I'm just thankful that Sampson was not hurt. We went home early and the next day he was jumping off the back of the sofa and humping the teddy bear again. Good as new :-) If it had been one of our other Yorkies who fell, both females a little overweight, they'd have surely been injured. |
wahh im so jealous of you! please post pics asap! =D have a safe and fun trip! :animal-pa |
