Help! I might have messed up! I've been having Chewie now for a little over a month. He's a great puppy but I think I messed up. When we first got him, he would throw a complete trantrum when we put him in his crate. It would get so bad we were afraid he would hurt himself. This have gotten worse. I thought it would be cute to sleep w/my puppy... Didn't think about having to wake up every few hours to let him potty. Well, I just brought him to have a bath at Petsmart. They called me to come get him because they put him in a kennel and he freaked out, and broke his nail. What do I do? Is it possible to start over? I need help! Britni |
Well, it seems he learned he could get out of the kennel if he made enough noise, so he reenacted this at Petsmart and wasn't getting his way, got more nervous, etc. Poor puppy! He can be readjusted to the kennel, but it is going to have to be a very pleasant experience for him. When I kennel Luca Dean, if he makes noise I tap on the kennel with something that kind of annoys him and say "no." Well, he got sick of the tapping noise and stopped crying in his kennel. You'll probably have to leave him in for a few minutes with treats, food, water, and a comfy blanket or a shirt that smells like you and when he stops crying, let him out. Work up the amount of time and then after a few days of this, try to keep him in there through the night. Did he have a really bad experience at his breeder's kennel before you got him? Was it the first time he was left alone (at Petsmart?) Sometimes it's very traumatic for a puppy to all of a sudden be alone in a cage after being near you for a long time. Good luck. You can retrain. It will just take lots of time and patience and consistency. |
When I took Archie to the groomer, he freaked out when he was caged. Archie is not used to being in a cage because he's got the run of the house. As I've posted before, I'm not at all an advocate of keeping a dog in a cage. And I've stopped taking him to the groomer. He gets in the tub, gets a bath with shampoo and conditioner, and his hair brushed. My boyfriend cuts his nails and I put stuff in his ear every week to clean it out, and we just got these toothbrush wipes to clean his teeth. After all this, Archie just runs into the kitchen because he knows he gets treats. Perhaps you can try to train your dog to go on a wee wee pad? Archie goes outside, but on his wee wee pad in emergencies or the middle of the night. |
