Biting.... My fourth month old won't stop biting hands and toes...is there anything that can be done to help stop this?...we have tried chew toys but she prefers hands...any advice would be great!!! :D |
Hi, my mitzy is 7 mths and she still nibbles at fingers and toes in play. All pups playbite, it is instinct afterall! Whenever she nips you, stand up and turn away, this is telling her that biting means no play, or whenever she nips, yelp like another pup would and ignore for a few seconds, then continue play, but you would need to be consistent. Mitzy still nips, but not in an aggresive way, its like she is nibbling on our fingers for comfort or cos she is teething. I had to go out and buy us all slippers, especially for my 3 yr old, cos mitzy would continuously follow his feet about :D |
Hercules is almost 5 months and he's definitely bitey too! We usually tell him no and put a toy in his mouth instead. When it gets really bad we'll stop playing with him for a little while. Sometimes I even try to stick his own leg in his mouth for him to bite - so he can see what it's like and that it isn't fun! Like dollymix was saying, when puppies are with their litter and they bite, the other pup will cry or yelp and then stop playing with the culprit pup. This teaches them that it is not good behavior. Of course it takes a while though. So try your best ouch and maybe that will help. Good luck! Brandi & Hercules |
I agree with Brandi. Dogs usually bite or nip because they think that you are their littermate, and not the "parent." In general, this happens if they're taken away from their litter too early, so it's important to make sure they know that they are not allowed to do that or you might end up becoming their pet, rather than vice versa!! |
as Ahia was doing all that biting and sometimes drawing blood i was really worried that we had gotten a dog that was mean. but she soon grew out of that (we did the ouch and ignore thing that the others suggested) and still play bites. but nothing more than gentle play now. she is 9 months now. i think it will get better for you if you just pretend like you are one of them and yelp and ignore. worked for us. and thank you to all you guys who suggested that to me. |
