This story really got to me and Im just so glad that you kept asking. That nurse has NO IDEA how much happiness she brought your aunt that day.
You should deffinately talk to her doctor and even let him know that she even ate her lunch when she came back from her visit with her furbaby.
Pets can heal and comfort their owners and that is a proven fact. Thank that nurse!

Send her a thank you card.Tell that nurse that because of her saying yes,your aunt felt strong enough to eat her meal that had been sitting there for hours. Some people can be so cold and imune to those suffering because they see it everyday and soon they don't feel anything. I guess it's a defence mechanism or some people dont believe how a pet can make someone feel better.

I truly hope they consider her situation as it seems there is nothing else they can medically do for her. This is the least they can do and best of all its free!

If I had it my way I would spend a few weeks up there with her. I could even bring my sweetie Triss. My family are dog people through and through. Every one of us has 'our own dog'. I dont think any one of us would feel complete without them. My family is also very small too and widespread that it makes it difficult to help each other. Me and my husband live in So. Il, my aunt and uncle live in Chicago, My parents live in missouri, and my cousin lives in California. Not including my husbands family, this is all my family members total.

I need to share something a little off topic:

I want to do more, but I am also 'ill'. I guess you could say that. I have this problem with my eyes. They refract light differently and it makes my eyes super sensitive to any light at all. It makes me feel confused if I cant see right. It started a year and a half ago for no apparent reason. So it makes it difficult to drive for more than a few minutes or even hold a steady job. Because any light source causes discomfort and disorientation. This is why I subsitute teach on my 'good' days. No doctor has been able to tell me whats wrong. I have even developed an anxiety disorder because of this, and now the doctors think its because of anxiety. I hate doctors.

So you can see the predicament I am in.

What you did and are doing for your aunt is so special and. . .it's just right. It makes me ache to think of how she must miss her baby and her baby her. I'm so glad they were able to spend some time together. I really believe you will be blessed for this and probably already have just by seeing the joy you brought the two. And I pray that you feel better soon. I would be anxious too if I couldn't see clearly. I have dreams that I can only see a blur and it's not a good feeling. Hope they find the reason this is happening with your eyes soon!

Heartwarming....you had me choked up as well...I say next time, I wouldn't even ask...they are your employees...you tell them this is how it will be...however, I would follow the advice about talking with the dr...might help and you wouldn't have the nurses calling security on you. ;)

Aw. That story made me cry. I'm so glad that last nurse let her see her doggie. Humans and dogs have the strongest bonds, it's almost like children.

I have an aunt with schizophrenia and agoraphobia, so she never leaves the house, and her min pin and poodle are her children since her daughter is grown.


It's so good to hear that there are people who still care. I can't believe those other nurses said no.


Maybe you should talk to her doctor, he could maybe pull some strings and get her regular visits.

Sounds like you are having your own problems right now.. I hope they can do something to help your eyes... As far as your Aunt its wonderful that she got to see her Snickers.. To bad she couldn't live out whatever time she has left in a nursing home, they are much more willing to have pet visitors.. Well at least the ones around here are.

Bless that nurse for her caring. As a nurse I can tell you that we sometimes get too caught up in policy and procedure, loosing site of the primary goal-the patients. There are some hospitals that have pet therapy programs but she wants her own baby. She (or you) can ask to see the patient advocate or a member of administration and state your aunt's need. Another way to go is to get in touch with the doctor, tell him how much that allowed visit meant to your aunt and ask that he write an order in her chart stating, "Mrs ----- may be taken outside for visit with family/pet as desired". As long as your aunt is not on life sustaining support or on isolation there should be no reason to refuse this. Most of the time the problem is that a staff member must accompany in case the patient falls or requires help-which leaves the floor short of staff.

this reminds me of a story about my mom.
My brother recently adopted a rat terrier, and after having it for a day noticed that he was allergic, so they tried to find it a good home. My mom has always been a dog lover, and volunteered at the humane society for many years. So when she heard about the dog needing a home, she was quick to offer her help.
She already had 2 dogs (a boxer, and a mixed breed) but they are getting old, and she knows it wont be long before they pass on.
The rat terrier named, Jack, and my mom bonded right away. She would do anything for that dog. He is soooo spoiled. A week after having Jack, my mom had a stroke, which left her paralyzed on her right side. She was in the hospital for 4 weeks before they admitted her to the rehab section of the hospital.
Everyday she would ask about Jack. So we started asking the nurses if we could bring Jack up or wheel her down to the entrance so she could see him outside.
Finally a nurse gave in and let him come up to her room, and he stayed up there almost all day.
My mom was the happiest I have seen her in a long time. Who says dogs can't heal?

oh my, I'm crying so much! I'm sorry sorry about your aunt. This is all so sad, but at the same time so sweet and heartwarming. A dog's love is so unconditional!

What a great thing you did for your aunt! The nurses that turned you down.....shame on them!! They, of all people, should know how much a pet means to a sick person!! God bless the nurse who said yes!!!

Your story touched my heart. I work with cancer and do understand how easy it is for health professionals to sometimes act like robots... I am sorry you have had to deal with this.

May the lord bless you for being such a wonderful niece. I do not have kids of my own either and I could only hope to have family there for if I ever need it the way you are there for your aunt. God bless you. I will keep your aunt in my prayers.
