Dew Claws falling out? I've never heard of dew claws just falling out of a dog's paws!!! Have any of you? My Ginger turned 2yo in Oct/07 and so was I ever surprised this afternoon when I felt her dew claw way too low in her fur!! I had my grdtr hold her while I did an upclose inspection and sure enuf, it was caught in her body fur, not in her leg. When I looked at where it was supposed to be, there was a black nubby there - no blood, no rip, nothing that looked like an injury. Out of curiosity, I looked to her other paw and the dew claw was missing and the black nubby was the same. I found the dew claw stuck in her fur in the same place as the other side. Then I looked to the back legs and there are 2 black nubbies there, too but I am pretty sure the breeder took the back dew claws out when she was a baby. It was definitely one set or the other - back is what I am almost 100% sure about. Anyway, there is no injury - both nubbies look really good! I will be checking with the vet tomorrow but just had to come here to see what anyone knows about this. I tried a Google search but that was to no avail. Any answer to this will be greatly appreciated! |
No answer, but isn't that interesting? I have heard of them being torn off, but not both, and there would be in indication of an injury. No way you could call the breeder is there? |
I know it has been a very, very long time since I got back to YT, let alone to the threads I started. Just thot that I should answer this one in case someone else has a question similar to this thread. I don't have a clue why I never got back to this one after I saw the vet. Anyway, the vet is such a patient man!! He has a great sense of humor, too so I didn't feel totally "crazy" when I showed him ShyAnne's dew claws and the 2 little black "nubby-looking" things I got out of her fur. He showed me the 2 front dew claw spots and how soft those are. She must've been digging hard enough to pull just the tiniest piece off or he said she could've chewed at them for some reason or another. All was well at least and nothing to be worried about unless I noticed her chewing at her paws. I never have seen her to do that so problem was solved. |
That's very interesting. I know I have read that some dogs dew claws are attached to the bone and some are not, so possibly that has something to do with it. I don't really know. |
My daughter (Sydney) came to me one day all upset because her dog's (Jesse) pad was coming of her foot. Sydney was upset, but Jesse was not. I looked and sure enough it really looked like her pad was loose. But upon closer examination I realized it was the shell of a vitamin K capsule. Somehow it got stuck to the bottom of her foot. |
