I have a friend who owns a lhaso apso (sp?) and has not had her vaccinated since she was a puppy (she is now 3). now she is planning on breeding her. are vaccines still in effect?

I would say the only way to know for certain it to have titers done. Why is she wanting to breed in the first place, would be my question? Doesn't sound like she is prepared in the least possible way.

I would say probably not. I had a titer done on Sadie who is 3 yrs old. The vet told me that she is all set right now for distemper and that the parvo is high and probably won't need another parvo for a while. I haven't had a titer done on Lillie yet (2yrs old). She is next to get hers done. If she is going to breed she should probably have her dog get the series of shots again to be safe. JMO

Personally I think she probably needs more health screening than just vaccinations

Sometimes I have to question vaccines in animals because my professional background is in human medical but....Why do our pets have to get repeat vaccines when we, as humans, do not?

Please know that my dogs are up to date on all their shots - I trust my vet and his medical background even more than I trust my own. I know there are a lot of different things about canines and humans.

I've been doing more and more research on this and the only reason is because I had one dog that had a bad reaction to a vaccination. It could have been due to his age, his health at that moment or even it could have been the vaccine but it did cause me to research.

I can't give you a professional opinion but I will say that I hope if she wants to breed then it's a responsiblity of that breeder to make sure that momma is as health and innoculated for the health of her pups and herself.

I agree with you...this is why I have titers done. The price is more than the shots but, I would rather pay the price of the titer than to have them get something they don't need.

............:thumbup:....overvaccination is responsible for more harm than what few things they might protect against.

I am not a fan of yearly vaccines...and have not been for many years. I do give a yearly parvo, 3 yr rabies, but nothing else for adults...all puppies get a 4 part series of vaccine..BUT my Yorkies do not go to dog parks or are in the company of dogs we do not know well...

what about distemper, due they ever get a booster for that?

The only way to tell would be to do titers. It is usually thought that at least one or two modified live virus vaccines have to be given after the immune system is fully mature (maybe about 6 months) for life time immunity. Some vets would not agree though. They would say we have to revaccinate and revaccine.

I am not saying that people should only give one vaccine and hope it works for the life of the pet but it is likely that it would be sufficient. The same isn't true for killed vaccines (like rabies).
