Yorkie coats Hi to everyone, I have had my Yorkie puppy going on 2 weeks now, and I just love him. Actually he is my daughter's puppy, but being she is a teenager, I'm taking care of him.lol Anyway I have a few questions. What is the easiest way to get the mats out of the hair? Can I use human conditioner to help out or is that a big no no. He isn't real bad I have been combing him everyday, but there is still a few. Also, how long does it take for their hair to get long? Mine is still in the wavy stage. And last do these dogs not eat very much? I put 3/4 cup of food out and it takes him a day and half to eat it. Is that normal? Thanks Darla |
Welcome to YT...a lot of members use Pantene conditioner on their Yorkie's hair...i wouldn't recommend using it all the time but once in a while is good...it will strip the old stuff of the hair...being that Yorkie's hair is kinda like human hair....hehe.. As for eating...every one is different...i put down 2-16 oz bowls down for 3 yorkies ranging from 6 months to 15 months and some it takes them about 2 days to finish...although i always refilled hehe... Some yorkie are picky eaters while some aren't...hope that helps~ |
I find that home cooking is easier and healthier. I give them 1/4 cup twice a day and they never leave a crumb. :) As for the coat you should always use a good conditioner. I use #1 All Systems shampoo and conditioner. I add a little bottle of hot oil treatment to the conditioner, work into all the hair and wrap in a warm towel for 15 minutes. Be sure to brush every day with a really good brush. I use the Chris Christionson brush because the little round knobs at the tips are not put on seperately which will stretch and break the hair and also pull it out by the roots. If you run into a stubborn mat, spray it with a detangler spray and use a slicker brush on it. |
Well, I use the human kind and have for many, many years. Are you using a metal comb? I hold the tangle with my fingers against the scalp so it won't pull and then comb it out gradually. It takes quite awhile for their hair to get long. If my memory serves me right, it was at about 8 months or so before the hair was long. But once it starts growing, it grows fast from then on...:D As to food, I would ask what your puppy's age and weight are and whether his food was changed when you brought him home from what the breeder was feeding him. It helps to sit with the finicky one's, if they won't eat. I have found that they will eat with you there. I gather you are free feeding. |
I was their hair with oatmeal shampoo, and regular conditioner. It's alot easiers to get the mats out while the conditioner is still on. Then rinse it off and nice untangled hair. As far as the food, mine eat like birds. Their weight seems normal, so I don't worry about it. |
