When I got my pup her ears were straight up. I was told not to let people pet her ears down. (like from the front of the head to the back) because it may break the cartilage in the ears, because as pups it is weaker, is this true?? | It's true that the cartilage is weaker in a puppy's ear, the bones are still growing rapidly and the calcium is used building bone. I've never heard petting as a potential problem, if the ears are so delicate that petting might damage them I would think that playing with siblings would be out of the question. The ears are nothing more than a handle to the other puppies in the litter. We shave every ear at four weeks to remove the weight, start with yogurt at six weeks to help with calcium, and tape starting at six weeks if necessary. Most will stand on their own by ten weeks at the latest. On occasion we'll have one that doesn't stand until after they leave at around twelve weeks. |
