Silly question. Just wondering when to plan on getting my babies spayed/neutered? Ace is almost 5 months but only about 2 lbs. Lizzie is 3 months and about 3-4 lbs. We go to the vet on the first for a check-up-but I was curious about everyone's own experience. Thanks!! |
I would ask your vet at your appointment. I think most people try to balance it. You don't want her to go into her first heat I don't think, but you want to wait just in case they need any baby teeth removed. There's probably a better rule of thumb to follow, so I'm sure others will jump in with the best answer. |
I'm not sure if your aware of it, but for some reason Yorkies don't lose their milk teeth on their own, they may lose a couple, but the others stay in, even after the permanent teeth come in. This is asking for problems because it causes the permanent teeth to come in incorrectly, and the two rows of teeth can cause food build up, leading to early decay. So most Yorkies have to have at least some of their baby teeth removed. Since this is done under anesthesia, most doctors like to combine neutering with teeth removal to avoid having to go under twice. Usually teeth can safely be removed at 6-7 months, and so many plan the neutering at this time. Joey's vet had him come in about a month before the surgery was planned to make sure teeth would be ready to be pulled at that time. Many people aren't aware that a Yorkies teeth play an extremely important part in their overall health, so anything you can do to protect their teeth will pay off later. |
My Augie is 7mos old today, and he just lost his last baby tooth. So none have to be pulled for him. His sister has 2 canines left. Now my 5yr old had 2 pulled when he was fixed. |
Thanks-that definately give some guidance :)! |
