Back to school soon...crate or not? I'm a teacher and will be going back to school in a couple of weeks. My Lucy will be 4 1/2 months old. Currently her "room"/crate is in the laundry room. She sleeps in it all night and has no accidents. When she's left alone, we leave her in the laundry room with her crate door open and s he pees on the tile. When we go back to school, she'll be alone all day and I don't want pee all in my grout. Is it okay to leave her in her room/crate until we get home? She can hold it that long at night so my husband says she can hold it that long during the day. I don't know what to do otherwise. The puppy pads aren't something we want to get started and I tried it anyway and she didn't use them either. Thanks for your input. |
Is there a doggy daycare around your house that you could take her too? My town has one that has a place for small and large dogs, so the small dogs don't get ran over. Another option is to get her a large crate and put the potty pads on one half and her bed on the other half...and hopefully she will use it. Just make sure the bed is washable so that you can wash it. |
I am a school teacher as well and we go back in 2 weeks:eek: I have 3 babies and they also stay in my laundry room. It is a large room 10X10 and they always stay there when we go out and during the day for naps. They rarely have accidents in there unless someone is sick. Once I go back to school I know they will miss the naps on the couch and going out with mommy to run errands. My oldest daughter is in college and she is in and out most of the day and I get home at 3:30. It really isn't so bad, mine sleep most of the day. I am sure yours will be fine ;) |
Our laundry room is also 10 x 10. I just don't want pee to get in my grout and smell up the place and have to clean it up when i walk in the door. There won't be anyone coming home during the day so it's pretty rough until fall (my husband is in and out then). When she does pee in there, it's always on the other side of the room near the vent. I suppose I could try the puppy pad there, but then you're buying puppy pads! Are there washable ones? |
Try using a blanket or whatever you have around your house. My dog has learned to pee in the woods and at the doggy daycare he will always pee in their litter box they have there. Just a lot of repetition and taking them to the same spot and say "potty" or whatever your go word is. Hope that helps! |
If she won't pee on the pads try to use a pad to soak up the pee and then leave it out so it smells like PEE.....does that make sense? When Chloe started out with the pads she would not use them until one of the other dogs peed on them....make it smell like pee and MAYBE she will use it. After she holds it all night, it will be hard to hold it all day too..... |
They hold it at night because they are sleeping, just like people :D I would suggest hiring a pet sitter just for one walk in the middle of the day. Pet sitters usually do more than just let them out to pee, which is why they get paid $10-20 a walk. They spend 20-30 minutes playing with them or walking them to wear them out so they sleep til you get home! Doggie daycare is awesome too but you have to find just the right one because she is so small and young. Keep in mind if you do daycare that you really only need to do it twice a week because they get so worn out they typically sleep on their days off. ;) |
A daycare sounds great, but there's nothing like that where I live, nor are there dog sitters. I don't think my husband would pay for one anyway. Hopefully she'll adjust because she can't come to school with me. That'd be great if she could! |
