I also volunteer for a rescue and I also adopted Gabby from the rescue. She's 2 yrs old and health is great. My adoption fee was 500.00 but she was already spayed, had blood work, up to date on shots & had a dental done. My vet charges over 500.00 for spay and dental alone. I also had no problem knowing that part of the money was going to save another baby's life.
My other thing is if you cannot afford a high adoption fee then you should consider adopting at a later time. Anything can happen to these little ones and you have to be prepared to pay for high vet bills. I have seen so many little ones come back to rescue after being adopted because they got hurt or sick and the owners could not afford the vet bills. Again sorry if I offended anyone but this is how I feel but I also want to thank you for thinking rescue. |:thumbup:
The initial cost of the dog whether it is $100 or $3,000 is insignificant compared to what he will cost you over his lifetime. If you can't afford the upfront fee, you probably can't afford to take care of another dog. Many people forget how costly these guys can be as they age. Even regular "maintenance" like twice yearly blood profiles are expensive. Lady's last bloodwork was over $300. Most do seem to develop health issues as they age which require medication and monitoring.
The adoption fee a rescue charges are a deal. I adopted my Lady outright (she was abandoned by her first owner). She was already spayed, but I spent hundreds of dollars right away on updating her vaccinations, a dental, and bloodwork. Rescue groups also work on training issues like housebreaking, etc, before a dog is adopted out which is wonderful. |
