Toys for a puppy Hey! My little one comes home in three weeks (but I'll be out of town for one and a half of the wait) so I'm trying to get everything ready for her now before it's too late. I know I need the basics, which include a crate, bed, bowls, brushes, leash and harness, and of course toys! Well are there any recommended toys for puppies? She'll be 11 weeks when I get her, if that's of any help. Thanks! -Vicky |
It won't let me edit the original post. :( I also wanted to know what's the best treats for puppies? I know several YT members sell treats but I don't know what's best for puppies, other than one of each. Thanks! |
Mine all love Loofas ... any size at all! |
I got Wall-E at 11 weeks... we got him some tiny squeaky balls to play fetch with, a soft plush animal that squeaks, and a puppy kong which he LOVES... good luck! Congrats on your new puppy! :p |
Well I went to one of the two pet stores in town and got a mini frisbee (it's too big now but when she's mostly full grown it'll be perfect size) and a small teething toy. I'm looking forward to any other suggestions as I'm going to the "good" pet store tomorrow or this weekend. I'm thinking I'll get her tiny balls, she even had mini tennis balls at the breeder (though I didn't ever see her playing with them). She also had a little squeak toy and small plush animal, I thought it might be smart to get a few similar toys and a few new toys. So I'll get those "old" ones but I'm still looking for new toy ideas. I've heard a lot about kongs but what exactly are they? And what is a loofa, the only kind I know is the kind humans use to wash with in the shower.... |
Dog Toys I would also recommend kongs. Fill them up with peanut butter, freeze and it will keep your dog busy for a while. Also if you get a dog toy with a squeaker, make sure you supervise them at all times with it, so they don't chew out the squeaker and swallow it. |

I'm well aware the dangers of squeaky insides and stuffing insides. But since the breeder had one and she really responded to it I thought it might be good for her, but I have no intentions of just leaving it around. Supervised or not at all! :D |
Kongs Kongs are great toys and they come in many different sizes and hardness depending on how strong of a chewer your dog is. I just use normal Jiff peanut butter with mine...but I guess like with anything healthier would be better :) I know the makers of kongs have a special filler, but I feel like it would just be easy to use peanut butter you have around the house (and my dogs likes normal peanut butter better) It is also fun to stick bigger dog treats in there and watch them work to get them out! Have fun with your new little one. |
Avery loves any 'plush' type toy.. she also loves the loofa dogs.. she loves her ball(the tiny tennis balls they sell at petco, etc.).. you will want some toys to chew(so she doesn't chew your stuff!;) the rope-type toys are good too(they make them small).. Avery has soooo many toys(you will accumulate alot i can tell you that! haha) but im trying to think what is good for a puppy! ;) Now for treats.. we have given Avery cheerios since she was little-she LOVES them  they are good for training also! ;) Cindy.. a memeber her on YT (chattiesmom) makes yorkie yummies and those are excellent!! they are perfect size (small) and all the babies go crazy for them!! Really i would just stick to anything that is all natural... (same with dog food:thumbup:) (do a search in the health/diet section ;)) congrats on your baby!!! :) |
Lucie's favorite toy is her loofah! She also loves playing tug-o-war so she has a flossy rope thing pets-mart has these pet stages toys that are also pretty good for chewing The only treats I have been able to give Lucie so far are called buddy biscuits, and I even have to break those up for her to eat, you can only find them from specialty stores that sell them, but their website is www.cloudstar.com |
First of all, congratulations on your new baby.....you have to be so excited! Most dogs seem to have their favorites when it comes to toys. If I were you, I would pick up one or two of the different kinds and then watch and see which ones she prefers. My gang loves plush toys that have good squeekers in them. They also love the Orka dogs toys. Their favorite is this one: Orka Dog Toy - Chew - Mini | Latex & Vinyl Toys | Toys | Dog - ThatPetPlace.com . You can get it at most stores as well, but they charge about double what you pay online for it. As far as treats, we usually use Solid Gold Turkey Jerky or just plain, raw broccoli. They go nuts over both.....even our picky one who used to turn down just about every treat offered to him. |
Thanks so much everyone for all of the good advice! I'm going to try to go to the pet store today or this weekend and go looking for all the things you have suggested! Quote:
