Be sure that when teaching "come" you make your baby come close enough that you can pick her up BEFORE giving the treat. When I was first teaching Jamie "come" he would get just close enough to snatch the treat and run, which was clearly not helping me in an emergency. I was just so excited that he came my way at all that I gave him the treat. So I had to totally reteach it. Now he does come and I also taught him to do "Up". When I say "up he turns around facing away from me so that I can pick him up. I think he turns around so that he's not facing me while I loom over him to pick him up. |
Trinket, our 2 yr old yorkie, runs to her bed any time I call her. When my 6 and 8 yr old grandchildren call her she is right there. Even when they don't call her she is right there, so it might have something to do with size. |
These Yorkies are too dang smart for their britches! They like to assert their independence that's for sure. I have been letting her just stay outside and NOT chasing her, but it is hard to do, because she eats anything and everything she sees. But COME ON has become a big game for her. There are times I could gladly kill her!:D As I said, she was just spayed, so I had to feed her ice-cubes for the teeth that were removed at the same time, and of course, I hand fed her because I felt sooo bad for her. WELL----it took me two days of her not eating or drinking for her to do it on her own again. They get into their little habits real fast! STINKERS! It is so very important that they come to you when called. One never knows when it will be an emergency. That is one of the most important commands and apparently one of the hardest! They are just so stubborn at times! Pat |
I had the same problem with Tino when he was younger. I would call and call and call and he would never come. Yorkies are stubborn! However they are also very clingy so I used that to my advantage. If Tino would not come when called within 3 times of asking for him to come to me I would say "Fine, I am leaving you" (as if I were going to work or something) and I would leave the situation, whether outside or inside (don't walk to far but don't look back) It works like a charm every time, he comes bounding toward me and I commend him for being "such a good boy". Ever since that he has never hesitated when called. With the exception of when he is sleeping in the bed and he knows mommy really does need to go to work, then he is just being lazy and doesnt want to get up LOL!:) |
When we took Aria to obiedience training this is how they showed us how to teach the word "come"... Put the dog on a leash, run backwards facing the dog so the dog runs following you, when you stop and the dog is right in front of you say "come" and give them a treat. She did it this way cause then it shows them to run to you when you say "come". Worked pretty good for Aria. She usually comes, then again I didn't take enough time to really train her. :rolleyes: See if it works for you! :) |
I have been trying not to look at her and just turn my back and come in,. It works some of the time. Thanks for the help from the obedience school. I was wondering what they did to have them come. I will certainly try it. Just hope I don't fall down running backwards! :( I have bad knees, and that is just something I can see doing. Then she would jump on my face and "play." :eek: Thanks for answering this one for me. It is a worry! Pat |
