Running Off Ok...yesterday and today cute little miss innocent and never does anything wrong has gotten a wild hair up you know where. The new thing is to run down the street to the neighbors yard. I call her and she just keeps on going. So tonight I grabbed the car key and honked the horn a couple times. That got her attention so I decided to get in and act as if I was leaving. She came running but I'm worried she's going to make this running off thing a habit. Please helpppppp, I don't want her running off and not coming when I call. This is not like her she always just follows me around and stays close. :( |
I don't think I would let her run loose anymore. Some dogs are runners and some aren't. Diesel NEVER runs. We can be in a strange place and he still doesn't run. My granmother's dog on the other hand will run in a heartbeat if given the chance. I don't think I would take any chance with your little one. |
Well it's not really like she bolts, she just starts walking off down the road. We don't live on a busy street thank goodness but still if I call for her she should always respond. The only time she really does it is when my sons 50 lb. almost 6 month old pup is out there with her. it's like double trouble when they're together. Maybe I should make him come in when I take her out. |
i have heard this story alot but usualy ends in a bad way. trust me its on here alot. please keep her on a leash or carry her. they always say she always follows me i know you love your dog and wouldnt want anythng to happen to her. all it takes is just once. dont mean to scare you but it happens way too often |
I know that's why it bothers me so much that she's doing this now. |
please be more than careful. |
Please keep her on a leash. My Sandy took off once.. after another dog.. She never had done that. It scared me so much... she could have gotten run over. I brought her in and put her in her kennel.. and she stayed there until my heart got back to normal.. She was on a leash after that for a long time when we were out front. She has never done it again... but I always look out to make sure there are no cars coming and no kids or animals around before we go out. |
Put her on a harness and leash! MeiLing is doing that now and she is not allow to go outside unless she is on a harness and leash! Because once she takes off so does Kioko... |
how about kioko and suki as his cinderella? sorry off topic |
I'm in the process of training my two new Biewers to not run off. I go out side and we have a long walkway. I hide behind the edge of the house and then my husband opens the door and walks back into the kitchen. Of course both Spanky and Darla head down the walk. Whewn they get to me they get a loud NO and squirted with the hose lightly. It trained all the others not to leave the house without permssion and these guys will learn soon. Then they get the don't go in the street training. With my 7 I would trust them all to never run off and never touch the street. The new ones should be trained by the end of Sept. I think training it the best way to ensure they are never lost or hurt. |
You need to put your baby on a lesh/harness ..... or this will end up in bad news ...... I can never ever let mine outside not being on a leah ... she will take off in a sec. .....:( |

If she likes to go outside with you, put her on a harness and leash and walk around with her. Please be careful, there is a recent post that is about a yorkie getting ran over. It is so sad when that happens, and I would hate for it to happen to you. |
I leave a leash on and all times so that if she starts to run, I can quickly grab the leash. So far, she is not fast enough to outrun me but that might change pretty soon. If I leave the leash off, I have trouble catching her when she starts zigging and zagging. |
My pup has also started doing this! We live in the country so I am not afraid she will get ran over but she will chase after deer! Yesterday I was chasing after her, chasing after a deer and she went all the way to the beginning of the woods! I got really scared because if I was not paying attention she could have went in and gotten lost :( She will also get the deer poop (gross I know) in her mouth and want me to chase her around the yard. I started today putting her on her leash every time she went out side. The risk is not worth the extra 10 seconds it takes to put it on and take it off. |
Yesterday, I was coming home and my neighbors puppy was in the middle of the street, and their 6 yr. old son was ready to dart after it! I called them and told them, that If I had not stopped someone else would have ran the puppy over, and her son could have easily went after the pup . Always keep your puppy on a harness and leash. There are too many tragic stories about this, and you do not want your pup to become anther statistic. :aimeeyork |
Their fast CJ slips out the door once and awhile scares me to death... I wont chase him as he thinks it is a game. I just holler at him that I have had enough and I was going to close the door and that he was bad boy.He usually comes flying around the garage and makes a beehive straight to the door. Then I get scolded by my husband because CJ slipped past me. The little stinker is f a s t . He really scares me:eek: when he chases dogs, cats, squirrles, birds. CJ even got by my husband a few times. I know though if I chase him he will just run faster and farther away from me. I just don't know what I would do if something bad happened to him. Taffy and Baby the farthest they go is just behind us to the neighbor for treats and scare their cat. But that only happened may be once every 6 months. I am going to have to try the hollering NO and spraying with water. I am also hopeing Cj will grow out of it too. He is 17 months old. We now have a new fence that my DH just finished putting up to keep everyone save. I just love the new fence.. |
YEAH! Total success today with Spanky and Darla, we left the door open and walked into the kitchen and neither one went outside. The front door was open for over 10 minutes! Darla barked at the door and ran into the kitchen. Spanky sat at the door for the whole 10 minutes but never went out. I will repeat this tomorrow and again Friday and if either one goes out the door I'll use the hose again but I think it is now a done deal! The really do learn fast. |
The risk is not worth the extra 10 seconds it takes to put it on and take it off...amen. Gizmo used to run before I started the leash thing. The only way I could get him back was to start the car and he would beeline back home thinking he was going for a ride. |
Starleneo-I noticed you are in Central Illinois. I am as well. I also am after DH to put up some fenced area. We have a huge yard, about 3 1/2 acres and it's silly to not have something. I want my dogs to be able to run free from a leash and harness while outside. They should be able to romp, play fetch and enjoy fresh air and sunshine when I'm outside doing things. I think it's cruel to make her stay inside peeking out the door at me when I'm out there. But if I'm trying to do yard work and she has to be on a leash it makes it difficult to get things done while dragging her around. 98% of the time she follows me with no leash but I don't want to chance the other small % that she would get hurt. So I'll start bugging hubby to put a fenced area. |
Bailey is a Yorkie that would also run off and leave me running behind, but i have not gave him the chance haha!! I can tell the way he darts away in the house and wont come when called that he would DEFO run off when he is outside with new and more exciting things to explore  i got him a pupper harness and a extendable lead so on our walks he can run off and explore as much as he likes ;) and i know i can always take charge if needed. its great hehe!! |
Do the invisible fences work for yorkies? I am not really sure how they work but I know they send a shock and didn't know if that would be too hard or if they make them for small breeds. Could be something for you to look into if you are against putting her on a leash.. just another idea :) |

I was also wondering of the invisible fence works on yorkies. My brother has one for his bigger dog. Only his is all wireless, he puts the box outside on the porch and sets the distance. The collar warns her when she's getting too close to the boundry and she won't cross it. If she does it keeps shocking her untill she's back in range. I like that because there's nothing to bury in the ground. You just have to make sure the batteries are always charged. It's amazing how fast they learn how far they can go. In the beginning you walk them around the boundry line and show them the flags. You can start gradually removing the flags. I'll have to check the pet store and see if they have them for small dogs. My other brother used a debarking collar on his small dogs. He put out flags and when they'd come to close he'd use the debarker, they learned quick too. Although he has an 8 foot privacy fence in the backyard he lives near a busy highway and wanted them to know boundries in case they ever slipped out the front. |
I should also add that Roxie walks very well on the leash and loves to go for walks with me. The first time I took her she did like she'd done it all her life. It's just when I'm at home in the yard it would be nice to not have to worry about her running after a bird or something. |

Adie is absolutely wonderful about coming when called. If I say her name sharply she stops dead in her tracks and looks at me to see what I want. But I would never ever let her out of our yard or house off lead. That is just asking for trouble! I posted on this board a while back about her running out the door after my husband. He was backing the car up and she was heading straight for it. I called her and she came back. If she hadn't she would have been run over. What a scare! |
