Barking Hey! Im considering getting a little Yorkie boy. I know it will depend on lots of factors (whether they are home alone or not etc..) and I know that each individual little baby is different, but do Yorkies bart A LOT???? I can cope with barking, but does it just get too much somtimes?? Any feedback would be great thanks. Oh yea also, do they sleep weel through the night?? Thanks, Hannah x x |
My two bark at things outside (neighbors walking dogs, loud cars, the UPS man) and loud noises inside, like if I drop something or if the oven timer goes off. They have different barks for different things. They will bark if they want water and the bowl is empty, which is completely different than their other barks. You learn which bark means what and what they are trying to tell you! Some days they are really barky, but if I wear them out they tend to sleep and not really care what's going on outside. It depends. They don't sleep very well through the night when they are puppies (Loki always had to go out to pee in the middle of the night forever!) but now my two sleep all night as long as they go out right before bed. They do wake up early in the morning to go out, but as long as I let them out and feed them hey will go right back to sleep on lazy Saturday mornings :D |
You can train your dogs not to bark too much. We overlook a park, and Joey considers the park his backyard. He has learned to not bark at people, but if he sees someone with a dog, he'll still bark. We filled a "tin" with a bunch of pennies, and say, "no" and shake the can, when we don't want him to bark. For a while, I had 3 tin's of pennies, so that one was always within easy reach. You don't have to get agitated or angry, just be firm, say "no" and shake the can. Usually "No' works by itself, but I still have to have refresher courses with the can. Remember, you will never eliminate barking, you are only trying to reduce it to a reasonable amount. Barking is a way for dogs to alert you to something, so always be willing to listen to want he's trying to tell you. |
I keep the couch right under the front window. They look out the window and bark. If I moved the couch away to where they couldn't see out the window it would be much better. I've started using a squirt bottle on Otis and he has almost stopped the barking. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
My Suzi is not too much of a barker, but, she does when she wants something. Toy dogs are notorious for barking though, but, A yorkie usually has a smaller bark, but they can be yappy at times. :aimeeyork I think it is all about the way you train them too. AND how much time you spend with them. I am at home all day , mostly 24/7 with Suzi . I believe that is why she does not bark too much. :aimeeyork |
I have found that they bark when there is something outside, or someone comes to the door.. since they have to be coming to see "them". ;) I have not found them to be yappy, or too irritating. I've had no trouble having them sleep all night, as long as they are in bed with me :D |
I got my Sassy when she was a year old. She does bark. However, she has been trained not to bark. Sometimes, when she thinks she hears someone in the front of the house and begins to bark, I simply open the door and say "Nobdy" and she is fine. It lets her still be in charge of 'security' while it shows her there is nothing to bark at. ;) The dogs on both sides of us bark incessantly. Sometimes, this will set her off, but all I have to do is say 'No Barking" and she stops. She is a good girl. Heck, I can even tell the dog next door to hush and she will, most times. However, she continues to do a growly thing 'under' her breath....that's pretty funny, too. Yorkies are highly trainable. All it takes is persistance. I couldn't do the can thing with Sassy. I did it once because a trainer had told me to do it with another dog. Poor Sassy....It hurt her feelings so much she ran away to another room. When I called her to me, she crawled to me on her tummy and that broke my heart. She does fine with spoken words. If this is something that is going to make the decision for you to get a Yorkie or not...do it!! You will be a much happier person for it. You can 'personalize' a Yorkie. :D All the best to you! :) __________________________________________________ _ |

I was wondering about this as well! Thank you for asking! I work from home and am on the phone a lot. I can't have any background noise when I'm on the phone. Gabby only barked when she heard a loud noise, or someone came in. Or if she looked up and saw someone she didn't hear coming in. So, it wasn't much of a problem. But Shadow is a barker. Plus when they play they bark a lot. I was wondering what to do. Thanks for the great suggestions! Only problem, I wouldn't be able to shake the can when working. lol |
well studying the puppy will help alot before you get him or her. i picked up ziggy cause he was the most mellow. he didnt bark hardly at all, i got suki and didnt nearly study as much and she is a whiner , cute though but will break the habbit soon. jmho. |
Oliver is 3 yrs. old and has never had a problem with barking. When we first got him he never made a yip or a bark which my husband just loved, but then one day I was playing fetch with my uncle's lab and there's Oliver in the mist of the action chasing and barking away. To this day, he only barks when he sees other dogs play fetch. I think it's funny, cuz he could care less about the ball just concerned about running after the dog and barking at them. Lilly on the other hand is 10 months old and barks at any given sound, but when we tell her no bark she stops and trots to a different room and tries to bark in that room. She has gotten alot better which is nice, but it's just her personality...or that's what I tell myself...hehe!! |
My little guy isn't much of a barker. Once in a while he will bark at a loud noise but not very often. As far as sleeping through the night, Sebastian has slept through the night from the day I brought him home...he sleeps with me so that might be why!! |
As long as you teach them not too.. they won't be too bad! Avie isn't a big barker.. of course she learned to bark from my moms doggies! but she will really only bark if someone is at the front door or random times like that.. but she isnt a big barker and when we tell her to stop she does.. MOST of the time! :p So as long as you are teaching your baby not to bark.. i don't think you will have a problem!(yorkies are VERY smart!!) ;) and we never had a problem with Avery sleeping through the night.. she has always slept with us, also! of course when we first got her.. she had her normal puppy training time.. so she would wake up a couple times and we just made sure to put her on her pad to go potty then she would go right back to bed!! like i said before yorkies are VERY smart.. and of course, you will have the training/puppy stage but it isnt bad and will come pretty quickly, if you are consistent!! |
