to those who have adopted from rescue shelters
 

hi everyone!

i am thinking about getting a second yorkie. but instead of purchasing from a breeder, i want to adopt from a rescue shelter. i have a few questions about it.

how long did the adoption process take for you?

did you pay a fee? if so, how much? how old was the furbaby when you adopted him/her?

how strict was the shelter in approving your application? does it depend on the shelter? do you know if they contacted your references, vet, employer, landlord??

any other information on adopting is appreciated!

We got 2 yorkie rescues (by chance on YT)...My daughter did all the work for us, but I have to say whatever (and it wasn't bad) she did, it was worth every mile we travelled...They are the most loving babies ever....i will do it again...not just yet though, we now have 3 ! Go for it !!!!

Some of them are pretty strict, and I know this bothers lots of people, but it's really hard on a dog to be rehomed, and that not work out because the landlord will only allow one pet. I know the regular pound is not near as particular because if the pets aren't adopted they will be put to death, but with rescues that doesn't happen. Another option, is offering to foster care yorkies, until permanent homes could be found, but I think it takes a very special person to do this. Good luck with your efforts, I think this is a great idea, just don't get frustrated if they seem very particular, many breeders are like this too because they want the first home to be the "only" home.

First off I want to thank you for your very kind hearted decision. Adopting a rescue with their histories can be a challenge to take on....but it is so very rewarding. Most that I have fostered come with little problems, but most problems are alleviated with the proper care and love.

I can answer for our rescue and I believe most will fall within our guidelines.

how long did the adoption process take for you? Normally it doesn't take long, if the dog is available. I would say on average about a week to ten days.

did you pay a fee? if so, how much? how old was the furbaby when you adopted him/her?The fees are minimal and depend upon different factors, but usually less than $200. Our rescues have been as young as a few months and the oldest so far is ten years old.

how strict was the shelter in approving your application? does it depend on the shelter? do you know if they contacted your references, vet, employer, landlord??We are not strict but are thorough. Yes, we do contact references, make home visits, etc. Any information provided on our application is verified.

As I said we are thorough in checking out potential new owners. The last thing a rescue wants to have happen is a precious life entrusted to the rescue, be put in a situation that isn't good for the dog or owner.

I got Chance from a shelter (they had all types of dogs - not just yorkies).

There was pretty much no process, picked him out filled out papers w/my info and he was mine.
I paid $62.50 for him and as far as how old, we are not sure of that. We believe he is under 4 yrs of age.
I know that many of the "Yorkie Rescue's" are very strict on who they adopt out too, but they are just trying to look out for the dog and don't want to get them back in worse shape then they left!

I rescued my third baby Gabby from Rescue Me Yorkie. The process took less than 1 month for me because there was a volunteer that lived about 5 minutes from my house. With Rescue Me Yorkie they call your vet to make sure that your current babies are up to date on shots and spayed / neutered...they will not adopt to home with intact female/male...2nd is phone interview, then after that you are scheduled for a home inspection and you have to pass that. Once approved....you're off to adopting.

My adoption fee was $500.00 but before she was released to me she was spayed, had her dental, bloodwork & shots.

My vet charges 285.00 for dental alone.

Some ppl might think thats a high adoption fee but you have to think that the money goes towards the sick ones too so it felt good knowing that the money was going to save another furbaby. Although I think puppies are the cutest little babies...I'm over the puppy stage....plus Gabby is still very young...she's 2 yrs old.

I filled out a lengthy application but it was no problem.

They want vet references and other personal references.

They want to know for what reasons you would give up the dog and what enviroment the dog would be living..

I was approved Oh in about 2 minutes! LOL

You want to be CERTAIN that you are committed to keeping the dog forever ...Of course EVERYONE should do that with every animal anyway. My opinion. The rescue has been through enough in its life without being disrupted again. You have to have plenty of patience as the dog might be afraid of things..lots of things..or not housebroken...or never knew love and will be hesitant about pettings at first or sudden moves or lots of things.

Its an amazing and wonderful journey once you commit to it. To see their eyes light up with new found joy. To want to be held when they never knew it before. Its wonderful to watch them accept an extended hand that wants to pet instead of hitting... To watch them sleep knowing that they feel secure finally and that this is HOME...They dont have to wonder where they will wake up tomorrow..or the next day...or the day after.
Its a beautiful thing. Trust me.

It will be hard but the rewards are immeasurable...

Oh and I paid 200 for mine but that was because I gave that much..I dont even know what they were asking..maybe 100$? This was a rescue lady that does not get funding...I donated
