Yorkie article Here's a pretty entertaining magazine article on Yorkie history that I stumbled while surfing the net. Probably nothing a hard-core Yorkie owner hasn't read long ago, but newbies like me might find it interesting. Here's the URL followed by a couple paragraphs: http://www.petpublishing.com/dogken/breeds/yorkie.shtml The Yorkshire Terrier From Coal Mines to Cloud Nine By Rick Beauchamp In September 1993 a belligerent wind snatched the roofs off four houses in Saginaw, Texas, and airlifted a 4-pound Yorkshire terrier clear out of her yard. "We knew she had been carried away," said Jim Davis, the dog's owner, "because a neighbor saw her flying about 15 or 20 feet in the air." The following day Davis got a call from a man who had found the flying dog, Sadie, running along a highway two miles north of Saginaw. The caller phoned Davis after reading a newspaper story about Sadie. But for a few ant bites, the dog appeared to be unfazed by her flight. |
I have heard that story before, but it still amazes me every time I read it. :) |
Awwww, poor baby! Bet she was terrified! |
Awful mean people, but a great ending. Thanks for sharing. |
The article goes on to talk about what a hearty breed Yorkies are and has a number of cool anecdotes about their stamina and, yes, heroism: Oliver, a hefty, 12-pound Yorkie pushed open a screen door and raced across the street to the aid of a 79-year-old woman being mauled by an 80-pound Akita. The Akita turned his attention on Oliver long enough for neighbors to whisk the woman to safety. The Akita was eventually taken into custody by animal control, while Oliver was taken to the vet's for nine stitches. |
Wow! Oliver sounds brave! Bruce is like that though, he always trys to protect me! We had the maintenence man at our apartment come in without knocking and Bruce pounced him so quickly and would not let him come past the door way near me! It has never happened again! |
