Need advice...a little worried My family would say I am a worry wort, but when something isn't normal I start to worry about Stomper. I've noticed a few thing lately I wanted to ask YT about. 1) He is itching licking his rear like crazy to the point it is real wet. What could that be from? Should I be worried? 2) He makes these "dry heaving" noises. Almost like he is going to through up. It almost seems like an internal hick up or something. It seems like he wants to gag. Why would he be doing this? I've seen him do this about 3 days out of 2 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. |
itching and licking his rear could be a couple of things, (a) worms, (b) infection (c) allergies. You should take him to the vet. That dry heaving could also be a number of things. Most yorkies do the dry heaving, wretching thing at one point or another. It can be caused by an aggravated trachea if he has pulling on his leash when you walk him. It can be from excitement. The little guys have delicate airways and it doesn't take much to set them coughing. It could be he's eaten something and scratched his throat, he could have an infection. Once again have the vet check it. You did not indicate how old he is. |
I agreed. I think a vet visit is needed. When I first read your post I thought of worms. Good luck and keep us posted please. |
BTW, I meant throw up! I just noticed my spelling error above. To answer your question, Stomper is 8 months old and weighs about 11 pounds |
The rear thing could also indicate that he needs his anal glands expressed. When they fill up they become itchy for the dog. To save you some money, I would go to a local groomer first. You can ask the groomer to see if his anal glands are full and express them if needed. I just had this done with Olivia and it cost $8- much cheaper than an office visit to the vet! If they aren't full, then you need to get to the vet. |

About Noises By now I sure hope he has gone to the vet because those noises are associated with upper respiratory infections. As for the licking i have no say. |
I would ask the vet about this-take him in. The dry heaving noise-I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. It could be serious, but it could be fine. Baxter makes this noise when he pulls on his leash (pulls ahead of me when walking). |
I think Stomper has tapeworms (have done a little reasearch). I took him on a walk today and he did one normal poop and the second one what slimmy and had white specs in it. I'm worried. It is Sunday and I am not sure it is serious enough to take him to emergency today. Do you think it is Ok for me to wait until Monday? I already called his vet to see if we can get an appoitment on Monday. Do you think that is OK to wait another day? |
Poor Stomper has miseries at both ends. The first time I saw tapeworms I was dog sitting a mom and her new babies. She pooped on the paper and I saw those white things wiggling. It is the first and only time I have freaked. I called the vet, took the poop, found out how expensive it is to treat 11 dogs for tapeworms. But, my vet said it was nothing that could not have waited til the next day since no one else wasactually exposed. They sure are ugly little things.. |
