Getting A Yorkie Puppy..... Plz Help.. Hi there... I have done months and months of research into getting a dog and into different breeds and have decided on a yorkie. I have wanted a dog for about 10 years so it isnt a rash desicion!! I think it's the right time for me, as I have the next 8 weeks off work so I can be home with the puppy to settle him in etc.. After I go back to work, I will be out of the house between 8 and 6. However, I also live with my mum who only works 3 days a week. I don't want to be selfish and get a dog if this is too much time for him to spend alone. I would walk him every day and would love nothing more than coming home to a dog, but I just want to know what you guys think. I would appreciate any feedback. Yorkshire Terriers are my fave, but does anyone know any other breeds which are better being on their own some of the time?? Thanks a lot. Hannah x |

my Yorkie does bad stuff when left alone.. it's the ONLY time he does bad things because he hates to be alone. Schuazers are REALLY good dogs and can deal with being alone. You can also seek them out in many different sizes, mini, regular, and giant. I love them and it was a breed of dog I wanted if I hadn't found my Teddy(BTW, I hope you know not all yorkies are tiny.. mine's 13lbs and not overweight). Just I think Yorkie is a breed that hates to be alone, they're fun little guys and loving but have such spoiled tempers. |
Welcome yo yorkie talk! I would recommend reading Yorkshire Terriers For Dummies. The beginning helps you decide if a yorkie is right for you. :) Good luck in your search, of course our answer is get a yorkie! But it is best to continue your research if you are unsure. :) |
He will do fine but what I reccomend is getting a second one to keep him company |

HAHAHA....spoken like a true yorkie lover!:D |
i used to leave ziggy alone for the same amount of time, he was in his crate and was potty trained not to go in it. some people may not think its ok on here but alot of people do the same. they do make larger pens like x-pen if you dont him/her in a small crate. they are the best custest dogs ever |
If your mom is there 2-3 days of the week, then you should be fine! I would suggest keeping him confined to either a playpen or a crate while you're gone, though. That will keep him out of trouble and also help with potty training. You might also consider taking him to day care all the days or at least a couple of the days you will gone for long periods. I bet he would love it! |
Thanks so much for all your feedback guys!! I would love nothing more than to have a little yorkie but I just need to know thaty I'm not being selfish in getting one! I think the playpen is a good idea... but I don't want him to be cooped up all day. I guess I have got some more thinking to do... I need to make sure it's right for the dog, not just right for me! Thanks again x |
Welcome to YT. :)Sounds like you are really doing your homework. Yorkies do like attention. If your mom will be home then he should be fine. You can either baby gate him in a room (make sure it is puppy proofed) or in an expen. We have an expen for Hot Rod and the way I have it set up, it is about 4' x 8'. He has his crate, food, water and toys. We slowly opened up the downstairs as he got better at potty training and now after 7 mos he has the run of the downstairs minus 1 bedroom-which we don't even go into (ha, ha). That's there all of my houseplants have been banished to, to make sure he doesn't eat them. And yes, you may want to consider a companion down the road. Good luck with your search and choice. p.s. I would probably do the same type of training with a larger dog as well. |
welcom to YT. You should be fine. My baby is in his crate from 8:00 to 3:00 and does ok. so the first thing I do when I get home is give him lots of hugs and kisses, then take him for his walk. This is my first yorkie and he is the smartest little thing...all he needs is to talk. Good luck |
