This is a CHALLENGE!!! Ok, I have my new 4 1/2 month old pup that is absolutely adorable and I have had him for about 3 days....I have a number of questions so if you can help me with any or all of them I would be so So SO grateful. Here goes: 1. I was hoping he would be a play companion for my 9 month old pup but so far when Derby (9 mos) tries to play with Jockey (4 1/2 mos) the pup just runs over to me to pick him up....which I don't do. Derby just wants to play but the pup doesn't....maybe it will just take time. 2. He was supposedly cloth pee pad trained but I don't have the cloth, I have the disposable and he doesn't pee on them....instead he chooses to pee on my hardwood floor, my walls, Derby's bed, the rug by the door....anywhere but on the pee pad. I don't have an x pen because I'm afraid it will scratch my floors, so I have him just in one room of my house. I feel bad for Derby because then he too is confined to that room. 3. When I leave the room....he barks and crys incessantly. His bark is unlike my other pups... Jockey's is very shrill and high pitched. I have started rewarding him (both of them) when he is quiet and slowly I think he is getting it but at the office, if I go out of sight and he is in the office with the glass door shut....the barking starts again.:animal36 4. Crate Training has been a real chore. I place him in the tiny small crate that he arrived in and give him a special treat and lots of praise. He then begins the crying/barking and the passed few nights it has gone well passed an hour, then he poops in the crate or pees and then I need to take him out and clean him and the crate up. And believe me, he had done his business, all of it just an hour or longer before. He had gone pee right before I put him in. I leave both he and Derby in their crates when I go to the gym for an hour in the morning and he is barking when I leave and when I return....poor Derby has to hear that for an hour while he is quiet in his crate. Argh! :animal36 He is sleeping on the clean pee pad right now. He just doesn't get it and I'm very frustrated. I need help, advice, remedies for making this work or I am literally going to pull my hair out. Thank you in advance. |
Maybe you could get an xpen and put something under it. Fold an old blanket to protect your floor, then cover it with a remnant of linoleum so nothing gets wet. Good luck :D |
Paulette....first off it will take time! This that I am posting is from what I have learned/experienced in that last month. (Mimi has been with us for a month now~~and she was 13 months when we got her) 1) I really think that Jockey will warm up to Derby within the next week or so. (With us just getting Mimi a month ago.~~She didn't want to play with Moose for the first few days. She would run to me too.) It took about a week before she would actually play with Moose. 2) Mimi came to us "pee pad" trained. Well she thinks the "carpet" is a huge pee pad! She is getting better now...but I am on her every hour to go outside to potty! If she leaves my side (which is only when she goes to sniff............then its outside to potty~ Is it possible to have her confined to the bathroom (or where there is no carpet or hardwood floor) and have Derby as you normally do? I do know it is hard to have them separated but maybe for a bit it would be best. Maybe you could put a large blanket under the x-pen so it won't scratch your floor. 3) Barking? I still think he is feeling a little unsecure. I think the "positive" training is good. 4) Not sure about crate training...we have never done that. |

Thanks Linda....I have tried the bathroom too and he still barks and cries and pees off of the pads. He is a little turkey. Ha! Yes, I think he is feeling insecure still and I know it will take time. I will go look for something to put under a pen and an inexpensive pen as well.....any suggestions on that? |

I will try that, thank you. |
How sad for you love I do hope things get better. The advice about putting a blanket to protect your floor is a great idea. I've just got Suzi 2 weeks ago. She's 12 weeks today. She came from a litter of 5 puppies and 5 adult yorkies. I guess I'm lucky in that Katie my 14month old yorkie, and Suzi, get on really well. They play fight constantly. Before we got Suzi she came for a couple of seperate days to get used to Katie, and also we went to the breeder's house at her request to get them used to each other. I'm sure this helped. Good luck love, I'm sure your little one will settle in a few days. Hugs Shirl x x |
Whenever a dog is poops in the crate, you should first assume that the crate is too big, or of your not taking the dog out often enough. Some people place shoe boxes in the crate to make it appear smaller. The dog should only have enough room to stand and turn around. However, in your case it sounds like her was crying BECAUSE he had to poop. I always took Joey out when he cried. I placed him on the pee pad, a rather large one, and waited 3 minutes or so. If he didn't relieve himself, he went back into the crate, and you pretty much have to ignor the cries. Since your dog is older, I wonder if he just isn't use to the crate. By the time Joey was that age, he graduated to sleeping in our bed, with a pee pad on the chest at the foot of the bed. I found some large rolls of vinyl with soft backing at Jo-anns and we placed that under x-pen. I made some pee pads for Joey, because he never did like the disposable ones that much. It might be helpful, if you blot a little of the pee with the pee pad. Some people keep their dogs in the small crate and take them out every hour or so and place them on the pee pad, if he goes he gets praise, treat and is allowed to play for a little it outside the pen, then back into the crate. I think nighttime is the easier way to learn to use the pee-pad because after 3-4 hours the really have to go, and you place them on the pee pad. The same is true in the morning. I think the first few weeks, he's just adjusting to the new family, and this is probably pretty scary for him being in a totally new environment at this age. I am rather new at all this too my old dog is really old... 17 and my pup is just 6 months we got him at 8 weeks. at first the old dog hated him and me, but now they are pals they even sleep together now. I think the pup has perked up my old buddy too just having him around her. so that should just take time. The potty training is still a challenge A BIG ONE!!!! We used an xpen and got a piece of plywood and a piece of remnant linoleum and glued it to the plywood then I took an old plastic table cloth and put it down first then the plywood then the pen. His crate was attached to the door on the side of the X pen with the door propped open so he could go in and out to use the pee pads when he needed to, but was still confined to his Xpen. We called it his "Condo". It worked great until he started jumping the X-pen, then I bought a top for it. but that is another story. LOL I will try to find a picture of it and post it for you. It helped with his anxiety too because he was right in the family room with all of us and our old dog didn't have to be confined anymore so she didn't have any disruption in her routine... Well not much...lol. hope this helps hang in there it gets better and is so worth it. Cher |
I'm not sure, but I think there are some kind of drops that you can sprinkle on the pads that help them know that's where they're suppose to go. Best wishes. |

I have been using the small crate that he came in...plastic kind. I am borrowing a x small wire one tomorrow and so I am hoping that will work. I think maybe he might be anxious because everything is so new to him too. I will put the crate right next to my bed where he likes to sleep and see if that works better...it has been next to Derby's which is a few feet away. I will give it my best effort. Thanks for the suggestions and the link Nancy. |

Yes I think you are right....but I thought the smell of Derby's pee on there would do the same thing. Any idea if that should work? |
Coopers Condo 1 Attachment(s) Well I will try to post this picture once again now we will see if you can see it... |
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, Look at that ADORABLE face !!!! Sooooooooooooo cute !!! Oh gee, I am brand new to the wonderful world of Yorkies myself and am taking ALL THE TIPS that I can get my hands on. Our Yorkie had a Yorkie 2 weeks ago. A little male. SURPRISE !!!!!!!!! Yes, Taylor came to us pregnant. What a blessing. I am not looking forward to training this little male. From all I have read it is extremely time consuming. I know they all differ. I am used to training German Shepherds. LOL Not these tiny, little SWEETIES. LOLOLOL This is all very new to me. BEST OF LUCK with your new little Darlin. I know you will get everything sorted out. Feel free to PM me anytime. :yorkiesar |
Jockey's brother I have Jockey's brother, Buster, now 5 months old. Buster was not pee pad trained either and we are crate training. We have an extra small wire crate, lined with a little blanket - he has been fine in it from the beginning (hasn't cried) but he does poop in it at night. He's taken out as late as 1:30 a.m. and then at 6:15 a.m. but rarely makes it through without pooping. It's already very small but maybe it should be made even smaller.... We just got an ex-pen and put it outside. We're trying to use the clicker method - take him to the ex-pen to pee and poop, click, give him a treat and then let him play in the yard. This didn't work too well this morning because the ex-pen was in the yard and he does not like getting all wet (dew). We moved the ex-pen to the patio so maybe that will help. Should we also use the bell method or just do one step at a time?? Has anyone else had problems with pooping in the crate? Do you think he needs to be taken out between 1:30 and 6:15? |
