Those with 2+ Furkids...I need your input!!!!
 

Mr. Zeus is my 3 year old furkid and he is a momma's boy through and through:D! He is so cuddly and loving to both my husband and I and we think he is just perfect!!! :aimeeyork

He loves other dogs and gets so excited when he gets to go play with his furfriends and furcousins!

So like many others on here we have been searching for a little brother for him so he can have a buddy around the house all the time.

But I also worry that he might not like a buddy as much as I think he would!

My questions are:
Have you had your older dog become less loving/cuddly/attached when you brought home a second dog? I have read some things (article, posts, etc.) recently that said he may become less affectionate and detached from us.

I have also heard that some dogs like being an only child/dog. He loves to go play with his buddies...but I am worried he might not want to share his mommy and daddy all the time and might like his "alone time"! What do you think?

I know I am a worry wart and a nut but this is something that I have been thinking about for a while and I really would love to hear your opinions!
I just want to make sure I am making the best decision for my family!!!

I dont regret having 2 at all. They play with each other and are best buddies. They are both cuddly and affectionate with us. I got mine when they were both pups so I dont know the dynamics of mixing an older dog with a puppy but I bet your dog would enjoy having a buddy.

I only have one new Yorkie,but he was in addition to my 14yr old Daschund, and 3 cats. Pongo is verry happy with his new little brother. He has never had to share anything,and he's very gracious,better than I could've ever asked. Aiden chews on him like a toy!!LOL And believe it or not Pongo acts younger. More energetic,and playfull then before. They need to have companionship,almost constant,and It helps to have another four legged friend to help watch him. Pongo goes nuts if Aiden does anything out of the ordinary. I never leave them unattended outside,but if I'm gardening or weeding and Aiden wanders off Pongo barks and runs after him. I will get another Yorkie when my Pongo goes. I think everything should have a sibling...that's why I had 2 skin kids. :thumbup:

Brownie became More Cuddly when we added each dog, He got jealous & Wanted pet's & cuddles everytime they did & He learned all of there Lovey Habit's too.

Do it! I have a 13 year old , 1 year old and a 4 month old. I got Maggie ( the 1 year old) because our elderly girl was ...well...elderly. Maggie is attached at the hip to me. I got our new little baby mainly for Maggie...she was acting elderly...like this is what I'm supposed to do I guess! Our new little girl "Nestle" is Maggie's girl!!! Maggie is still attached to me , but she loves her new sister. They run and play in the yard forever. Absolutely NO regrets! I love them all to pieces! They are best friends!:)

I have 9 and each addition is accepted just fine.


I do know one of my puppies that lives down the street comes over all the time. He is fine at my house but if any dogs go to his house he gets upset.

I would say most will adjust in time.

Then after Baxter #2 comes along Bernie decides he loves all of that. Even though I treated them both with equal amounts of love, Bernie got jealous when I would do all that stuff with Baxter...now he is the most loving pet ever! Worked for me.

Our yorkie is also our little spoiled baby, so we had the same thought process as you regarding whether or not he would actually want another dog in the house. He love other dogs so much that we thought he would like it though. I think for the first couple of weeks your baby may feel confused and might even avoid the new addition, but once he gets used to it, he will love having a brother/sister. Our yorkie was almost 3 yrs old when we decided to get Emma, and he accepted her completely. She was 7 months old when we got her, so she wasn't going through those crazy puppy stages. I think that might have helped too.
Our yorkie is not less attached to us by any means. He still loves to give us kisses, bring us toys to play fetch with, sleep with us, cuddle, etc. Nothing really has changed for him, except that now he has another dog to play with as well. Our other dog, Emma is just like him.
Now instead of just having one dog laying on our heads at night, we have two. Instead of playing fetch with one, we have two, and same thing with cuddling. I have two dogs on my lap when I'm on the couch. They cuddle with each other on top of us.

Now that could have been my story too! We got (our) Maggie as a companion for Mitzi our 11 y.o. only fur kid and it worked out so well. After Mitzi passed away we got puppy Mikki and now Maggie (a ~3 y.o. abused rescue) comes out of her shell of hurt and mistrust and got much more affectionate towards us... My opinion: do it!!!

I have 3 and love it !!! Our first one lays on my husband's head to 'guard' him against the 'other' 2 when in bed...It's so funny...Never a dull moment !

I did the same thing. We have the sweetest most docile 4 year old yorkie, and I often worried that he was depressed by being a lone dog. So we got him a little brother!

Cooper wasn't ecstatic about being a big brother, the new baby "Baron" has a LOT more energy and jumps all over Cooper while he's trying to nap. BUT when we took Baron in to get his neuter and puppy teeth removed, he had to spend the night at the doggie hospital and was gone a day and a half. COOPER was depressed and kept looking for him in his crate!! Here we thought he HATED his little brother but it turns out when we brought Baron home from the Vet, HE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE EXCITED!

Point of my LONG story is: I had the same fear. But dogs are pack animals, and if you give them both attention (remember it's like bringing a new baby home, with a toddler already!) Your current dog will love having a companion :animal-pa

I always had one at a time until I was laid off and decided to stay home for awhile, I was always afraid that if I got another one, my current baby would hate me and the new puppy. But my pom was 8 and I really wanted a yorkie again so I got Cali, now 3, then I got Pixie now 2 1/2 and then Dixie who sadly passed after a short 5 weeks with us then Roxie who is now 9 months old. They all accepted the new one and my grumpy pom and Pixie are best buddies and Pixie and Roxie play all the time. I also don't feel so bad when I am gone for a bit. I say do it!!
