Will breeding change my baby?? I have been approached by two different people about studding my Frenchie. I am hesitant b/c I've heard that it changes them in the sense of marking their territory. Is this only if there are females around or not. I have another male dog inside (which has never been bread) and I wonder if this will make Frenchie more likely to mark areas in my house. I'm perfectly happy with not breeding him but my huband thinks we should breed him at least one time. I know we have alot of breeders out there and I really respect you advice.: Frenchie's mom |
There are alot of reasons not to. and yes it can change him. Marking and also attitudes they can get more aggresive. here is a website to let hubby read. Dog Owner's Guide: Ten reasons to breed your dog |
Thanks I knew I could count on you guys!! |
After breeding your male only once, you will have a stud. Some studs having more of a tendency to mark and you will risk him losing the personally you are used to. It is even possible that that is what he will want to do all the time. And is it worth it breeding just one time when it is still important to do pre-breed testing (bile acid testing, blood panel and possibly knee xrays, urinalysis, thrroid testing, hips checked, STD check...)? The stud owner usually keeps the bitch at their house, so you would be responsible for somebody's dog. The female needs to be held during the tie so she doesn't pull away and hurt the male. Then if the owner of the bitch is inexperienced, he/she should be able to come to the stud owner with questions/concerns. So if you want to breed, make sure it is right for you first.:) |

I certainly wouldn't risk ruining his personality. In addition to marking, he might start fighting with your other male. Also, your other male will likely pick up marking from him and you'll have two dogs marking in the house. :( :( |
There was a major difference when we breed our Krissy to my frieds male Rosco. He was a sweet little guy and became a terror afterwards. She said she wishes she had never bred him. Know that she has though the vet said fixing will make little to no difference. We bred our teddy once and then fixed him and he got back to being a sweetheart but it took a year! |
If I was going to breed my dog, I would do it much more than once, talk about frustration, but they can't miss something they've never known. Breeding changes your dog from a sweet little baby to more of teenager, who marks. I love knowing that Joey will be my baby for life, something you can't do to human sons. :D Here's a great link with more info on breeding. Breeding Your Dog |
Awww, you have a frenchie! I would love to see a picture!!! :D |
