I want to groom my baby....but For those of you who groom your own babies....what about the anal glands...do you expel them and if so how..... I am in the process of gathering all my equipment for grooming because I'm so afraid of someone else mistreating my Emma. But I want her to be pretty and healthy. |
Many people recommend never doing this just for the heck of it. Joey had a scooting problem and we took him to the vet, and he showed me how to do this. About every 2 weeks the area would bulge up again and need to be expelled. It's very important to do it correctly or you could push the contents the wrong way and cause in infection. The vet said that some puppies don't push hard enough when pooping and don't empty the glands. Finally Joey outgrew the condition and for the last year and a half hasn't needed them emptied. I would just be on the look out for scooting, that's usually the first clue. Some groomers do this automatically, but many vets don't recommend this unless there's a problem. Have your vet show you what to look for and how to do it correctly. |
My lil one is almost a year and a half old and I have yet to have to clean her anal glands..I have heard that once you start doing it then it becomes a regular routine....I do check her to see if she seems swollen around the anal area and so far, so good... |
Ok, so if I take her to groomer, i should tell them not to do it... She has been groomed twice Hopefully they didnt do it.....Thanks very much for the input. |
My groomer doesn't do it. It's considered a medical procedure. Kacee is three and her glands have never been expressed. I think if you start something like this unnecessarily then it has to be done periodically for the rest of their lives. |
My yorkies are 3 1/2 and have never had their anal gland expressed and have never had a problem. I wouldnt do it unless its necessary or Ive heard they will need it done all the time. They should express naturally when they go potty |
