Some Encouragement Please! I need some encouragement My pup is 9 1/2 weeks old. I know she is still teething but when do they stop the chewing & play biting? She is a wild little one. |
I'm no expert Aiden chews all the time. When I want to pet and love him he wants to eat my face. I sometime have to say sternly "NO BITE" he knows I mean usiness. I also have alot of things that he's allowed to chew on. His favorite is my husbands old slipper. Kongs are good. I also take a wet/frozen washcloth he loves that and it helps keep him cool on hot summer days. He's gotten alot better as he gets older. He'll be 6 mo in August, and he'll be neutered then, hopefully the teething will be even better. Hang in there, and just have alot of things around for chewing. ;) |

I sooo need to get my eyes checked. I only saw the, "His favoite is my husband" and thought he is just like Boo. DH is Boo's favorite chew toy too! Gracie will turn 6 months on Fri. She went thru a bad spell of chewing on everything, especially if it was wood. Wood furniture, the baseboards, the backyard fence  But it has slowed down a lot in the last several weeks. So hang on, it does get better. The best thing I could do to get her to not chew on me was squeak really loud and sharp just like one of her litter mates would have done and she immediately stopped and started licking me instead. I've heard if you gently pick them up by the scruff of the neck, like the momma dog would do, it also helps to calm them down and really get their attention. |
Make sure she has lots of things of her own to chew on, and if she's chewing on something she shouldn't distract her. If she's biting your hand put her down and walk away from her. Katie was 6 months before she stopped chewing but never chewed anything she shouldn't with the above rules. I'm doing the same with Suzi. She's 11 weeks. Hugs Shirl x x |
If she's biting on you, squeal really loudly. Even if she didn't hurt too much, make it sound like she did. You need to stop her doing this before it gets too much & that's the best way to do it. It's what she understands as it's how her litter mates would have complained if they got hurt when play fighting. xx Meggie |
How old was she when you got her? Puppies learn bite inhibition from their mother and siblings, but if she was taken from her mother too soon, she missed this and other valuable lessons in socialization. You will have to teach her bite inhibition yourself. Here is some information: Dog Owner's Guide: "No bite!" Just a reminder to everyone looking for a puppy.....Yorkie puppies should be twelve weeks old before going to their new homes. The Yorkshire Terrier Club states in its Code of Conduct: 8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. |
Hot Rod never really chewed our hands or fingers but he doesn't like his chew toys! He chewed on the coffee table legs at first but bitter apple helped that. Just make sure to have lots of chewy type of toys...I like the petstages ones and more importantly he does. Good luck! |
My little Peanut chewed til she was about ten months old....dont get discouraged...Peanut is three years old now but I have two puppies that are chewing one is 7 mth and the other 3 1/2 mth. Just give them lots of chew toys and spray your walls(yeah mine like the wall for some reason)/table legs and anything else you dont want chewed with sour apple. and dont worry we all know what your going through...Im sure we all have experienced the favorite pair of shoes being chewed...(I was so mad when Peanut did it but I still love her). |
Ahh yes this can be frustrating...our family did the "no bite" routine and this worked very well... She still likes to nibble on our hands when she is very excited...her way of playing...but we just say "no bite" and she then rubs her little head into our hand instead! Good luck! |
Ahh I feel encouraged by this tread. Katy loves to bite and chew on us. She is 12 weeks old and is a very active little one. Ignoring her has not helped at all. I am going to try the loud "Yelp" again. I have tried the spray bottle with water but I felt that was too mean and anyway she thought it was a game. HeHe she thinks everything is a game. She is just in love with life. I am sure "this too will pass". |
make sure he gets plenty of toys to chew on, and maybe some bully sticks or flossies |
