Puppy Fighting We recently brought home 2 puppies that are now 10 weeks old. One named DillyBar and the other is named Zoey. Their alias however has become "little pull-aparts" because it seems we are constantly pulling them apart from one another. It seems all they want to do is fight with each other, always concerned about what the other pup is doing. Should we be concerned? Will they outgrow this or is there something we can start doing now? We don't want them to fight with each other when the grow up but we do want them to get along. We have been pulling them apart everytime they go at it and have repeated the word NO about a million times. We have arranged separate sleeping kennels for them as well so they don't scrap in the middle of night! Any suggestions would be so welcome! |
Hi Dillybar My personal experience is to let them hash it out. Don't break it up. Theyr'e trying to establish who the leader is. Unless there is a huge difference in size, I believe that they will know when enough is enough and you should just let them be. Are they littermates? |
They are just puppies birng puppies. My pups fight but not constant and its more playing than fighting. They are pretty young they will calm down as they age. |
Simon and Nigel Welcome to YT. I have two male puppies that do the same thing. They are littermates and they fight alot, but they also play alot. If we seperate them they start looking for each other. And they always want what the other one has. We don't break up the fights because we were told that they are just trying to figure out who is the alpha dog. So my suggestion is to let them fight and see if they behave better. |
Hello & welcome to Yorkie Talk!! My 2 fight all the time (they're 1 1/2 and 7 months). I just let them play. If I see that it's getting out of hand I'll put a stop to it, but for the most part they get it out of their systems for the day & then they're fine for the rest of the day. Good luck!! |

i agree with what everyone else said about letting them hash things out on their own. If you constantly break them up they will never find out who is alpha and things could get ugly. So even though it is hard, let them hash things out and then it will be a happy household. :) |
Mine are too! At first, I felt so bad, when the chase was on. Roxy and TJ will chase each other from the kitchen around the table tru the dinning room to the TV room around the couch and back again and again and again! Sometimes it is TJ doing the chasing and biting Roxy's tail and back legs and ears. I would always break it up I felt so bad for my little girl (she is ever so sligthly shorter than TJ), but then the bitch in her would come out. When it is her turn to be the chaser, oh boy, TJ really has it coming... Now, I let them do what they need to do. They never hurt each other and when they have had enough or they need water, they both stop. Everyday it is something new! I don't know if they have established who is the 'alpha' dog, I think it depends on which day and who's turn it is. I don't think you should keep them apart. My two get freaked out when they don't know where the other one is. They love each other and I have noticed that they do get 'jealous' of each other. If I hold one when I put them down the other one IMMEDIATELY runs up to them and smells them to make sure they didn't get something that they didn't get, it is SO FUNNY! |

LOL....at "pullaparts".... Francie |
Gracie and Sammie do the same thing. As long as there is no blood, don't pull them apart - let them work it out. |
Hi Yes, they are littermates. Dilly is about 1/2 lb heavier that Zoey and seems to be more aggressive. I have however seen her go after him too. PS. Thanks to all of you for your response! I really appreciate it! :) |
Welcome to YT!!! My two girls "fight" all the time...but I wouldn't call it fight, more wrestling!! They will pin each other and chase each other and take each other's toys...it is part of living together...think about you probably didn't always get along with your brothers or sisters when you were younger...they older they get the better they are together...my girls used to fight all the time but now they play together more and fight less often!! As long as they are not hurting each other they are fine!! |
Typical My boys are not littermates but about a month apart in age. They fight alot, but it is mostly play. I have never broken it up, they don't get that rough. They always want what the other has even if what they have is identical. Sibling rivalry. If I pick up Ben, then Gar gets upset and vice versa. Dogs play and rough house just like kids, I try to maintain an equal balance between teh two, but they are just like human brothers, fight, bicker, etc. but cannot stand to be without the other for any length of time. |
bitter apple Spray their backs, feet and ears with Bitter Apple..I spray my pups when the adults get to playful with them. |
