No Spay for 8 month old KiKi
 

KiKi saw the vet on Saturday for her check up and Spay consultation. Well she is only 2.4 lbs and the vet will not spay her until she reaches 3lbs.
KiKi has had issues with low sugar in the past, so having her fast before the surgery is a little scary too.
Anyone else out there with such little ones that can't be spayed or neurted due to size?

Better safe than sorry. Sounds like a great vet though. Just make sure you keep little Kiki away from any males. I've never had any problems with unfixed females but I know it's better to eventually get them fixed if you can. Kiki might never make it to three pounds though. Some are just tiny forever.

And she told me she will
not put him under weighing
less than 3.5lbs it's too much
of a risk and she will not
chance it.

Currently he is 2.5lbs
and the vets/techs
where I go said he wont
get bigger than 3lbs
3.5 if I'm lucky

But 4lbs no way

I also had a different
vet say the same thing
when I had to take him
for an emergency appointment

better to be safe than sorry. abby was 2 days shy of 6 months and she was 3.3 lbs.

:aimeeyork No, Your baby is too small. I am glad the vet will not risk it. My Suzi is not on the tiny side, and I have heard all the benifits to spaying. she will get the surgery done in september/Oct. I am still scared about it, but If Suzi were tiny, then absolutely not. Your making the right decision, and the vet too. :thumbup:

I never heard of the 3 lb thing. My vets wait til 2 lb. I waited til feather was 2 1/2 lb and 11 months and she did fine. I would have preferred to have her done before her first heat but that didn't work out. Their chances of mammery cancer increase with each heat.

I also have a tiny baby and had to wait until she was 10 1/2 mos. before she could have her surgery. She weighs 2lbs. 7 oz. I was a wreck the day of her surgery (so worried) but she did great. Took her about 3 days after to be back to her old self. Good luck

op I am sorry you could not get your spay hon, BUT glad the vet is looking out for her!

my vet will not spay/neuter before 3 lbs....and he would rather they be 4lbs....just too risky

I understand your concern..and your vets too..
I just had my Little Pixie spayed last friday( she's 2lbs 12oz last weigh in!).I was stressing over whether to get this done or not for months and went to have a chat with my vet..he was VERY confident about the whole thing and reassured me she would be fine, I asked all the questions I could think of, what anaesthetic did they use? (isoflourine is the best) did they operate on a heated table? did they do all the pre-op blood testing? etc etc..he answered all my questions with exactly what i wanted to hear so i went ahead with it..I was nervous but i had a good feeling about it all..when i picked her up he said her blood sugar had been a little low and that i should try and get some food inside her that evening..I gave her some vitamin & mineral supplement and a bit later she ate some food off my finger and was drinking water.. within 24 hours she was almost back to normal..she recovered so fast i was amazed! I thought it would take her much longer..4 days on and i'm having a hard time stopping her from tearing around like a mad thing!!:eek:

Hi understand your concern too. Your baby is still very tiny. I have two females Mica and Kali. Mica was spayed at about 6 months and was just 3 pounds. Kali was recently spayed at 6 1/2 months and was 3 lbs 4 ounces. Pre-op blood work was drawn first. I had full confidence in my vet as he is a well known specialist with tiny toy dogs and especially yorkies. All of the best yorkie breeders bring their yorkies to him and highly recommend him. I agree, that one should be very cautious to assure that their vet has alot of experience with providing anesthetics to dogs that are this tiny or complications could ensue. I also agree that I have been told that Isoflourine is the safest anesthetic for these tiny babies. Our vet always keeps the females in hospital over night with IV and starts them on gastro diet the following morning. We were able to pick both of the girls up around 10:00 am the next morning once they were eating well and keeping down their food. They both recuperated remarkable well after the surgery. It was just hard watching them closely so they wouldn't over do it or start jumping up or down on things. Hope that all goes well with your babies surgery when she is ready to undergo it. Take care. Pebbles just got spayed a few weeks ago... she was 2.7 pounds at the time and almost 7 months. My vet was very confident and did all that she was supposed to do. She said pebbles did great and was very healthy. Apparently that day she spayed and neutered all small dogs. She said it was nice to just have to deal with the little ones. Pebbles slept for 3 days on my lap basically and I babied her the whole time, but after that she was up, barking around the house and running around again. Apparently she was too active too soon, because her wound formed a hematoma or whatever its called, and it will take a few months for the swelling underneath to go down. Other than that it went perfect. She was on pain meds/anti inflammatory for 4 days

I took mine to get neutered, and he weighed 6.5 lbs. He didn't make it. The vet said he had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. I would much rather him walk around "marking" the furniture instead of having to bury him yesterday in my yard. It has been a very sad two days!!!!!! When I dropped him off, I never knew I wouldn't see him alive again. Take care!

Yes listen to your vet. It's not worth the risk when they are that small. Hope your little one has a growth spurt! ;)
