Silver Yorkies Is it rare to have an all over silver/grey yorkie????? |
I would think that would be a lack of pigment or a "born blue" Yorkie;) Debra x x x |
Why are silver Yorkshire terriers hard to find? Most breeders are trying to breed to the AKC standard which calls for a slate blue body color. From time to time as breeders try to get the correct coat color they do produce what is known as a "Silver" Yorkie. Yorkie's can also be more of a slate blue or black coloring. Some people actually prefer these colors to the traditional blue and gold colors . |
Bump:):):) |
Are they born silver or do they turn silver as they get older? Either way, it is a color that should not be purposely bred for and never should be called "rare". I have seen adults that are pretty much silver and have a silver/smutty head. But still a DQ. |
It's funny you ask about silver yorkies. The first yorkie that I saw and made me want a yorkie was totally silver. Having never been around yorkies before I thought this was their normal color and they all were silver. I started looking on the internet for yorkie puppies and kept seeing these little black and tan puppies......I kept wondering "where are the silver ones" Fortunately, it was the personality more than color that made me fall in love with yorkies. Now knowing what the standard requires, I laugh at myself for my ignorance! :p |
They are born black and tan the standard color then turn all silver before age 1. |
I have a gold/silver yorkie. Although I say it's more of a grey than silver. |
Some people may get mad but..............I just dont get why people are sooooo against breeding various colors because they aren't the "standard" not saying that I agree with breeding colors as we are not sure of health problems they may present but I think it is being hypocritical when someone says that certain colors shouldn't be bred because it is not the standard when 90% of all yorkies being bred ARE NOT THE STANDARD OR EVEN CLOSE!!!!! I have seen many dogs in the for sale area and the nursery area that are the total opposite of the standard for a yorkie. So I find it quite funny when someone says you shouldn't breed certain colors becuase it isn't the standard but then they go and breed a yorkie that according to AKC is not the a proper representation of the breed either. So I think if people are to criticise one thing because it doesn't represent the yorkie properly they should criticise another. |
I understand what you're saying. There are too many yorkies being bred that are not standard beyond the color issue. In fact with so many "non-standard" yorkies out there anymore, it's become hard for a person to find one within the standard. All the more reason to know the breed standard and know your breeder! |

That's find a lot of stuff rubs you the wrong way but everyone has their own personal opinion. I was saying that people say that you shouldn't breed yorkies because they are not the standard. KEYWORD: PEOPLE say this I did not say "because they don't meet the standard" these are the words that come out of the peoples mouths a.k.a a "quote". I never said that I agreed with breeding colored yorkies all I said was that many people breed dogs that do not represent the breed of yorkie but people have soooooo much to say about colored yorkies, why this would rub you the wrong way I dont know. It seems as though you have to find every single little post from me that I post something you don't agree with and try to "bash" me. Oh and when I said I think its quite funny I didn't mean it LITERALLY it's a form of figurative speech. I NEVER SAID THAT EVERY PUPPY WILL BE SHOW QUALITY so where you got that from....who knows:confused: You are twisting my words and turning them into something they're not. You did not have to repond sarcastically and question my intetions for breeding and I think you were quite rude. But oh well. They're ignorant people EVERYWHERE we go. |

I KNOW......I just dont get why people are soooooo against breeding various colors because they are not the standard......and I find it quite funny when someone says you shouldnt breed certan colors because it isnt the standard but then they go...... I am saying that I dont know why people don't breed colors because they say they aren't the standard but then they go and breed a yorkie that is wayyyy far from the standard. So what I am saying is you dont want to mess up the breed by breeding colors but you go and breed yorkies that do not represent the standard at all. I AM NOT saying it is ok to breed color I am saying don't say it's not good to do something and do something else that is equivalent to the first problem. I also think that you are riding all of what I know and my knowledge on my age and saying that I'm immature because im 17 but you are sitting here wasting your time arguing with someone because YOU miss interpreted what I said. |
Ellie's mom is more of a silvery color than black. Ellie has pieces of silver but isn't as light.:) It is too light to be standard. |
I have 2 silver yorkies and while I think they are cute I dont think they should be bred but Ive seen plenty of breeders on here doing it. I really think it takes an excellent breeder to hold to the standard |

I picked a yorkie because of their lil personalities and their uniqueness... I don't give a hoot if he is perfect and "standard" or not.. I want a lil spice so off the "standard" is fine with me.. if I wanted a standard yorkie I would have cloned one of the standards ones and been bored with myself..... love a yorkie for a yorkie regardless the color size or how it's registered... I'd not love my children any less if they ahd a hair or eye color I didn't want them to have, nor would I be up set if Cyan was registered and Korbin was not..... and since i see my Leo as a child, he is perfect they way he is. thank you |
One thing I don't think most people understand . . . is that finding a Yorkie that truly meets "standard" is what is indeed . . . unique. However, a yorkie doesn't need to meet "standard" in order to be adorable. :D |
I have to say, I too love my furbaby unconditionally. It doesn't matter one little bit that he won't breed or be shown. He loves to play, and be what he is, a little dog. I don't want him to be perfect. He's a mixture of terrier's, and it doesn't matter how hard anyone tries to breed the perfect Yorkie, he'll still have the gene's of mixed terriers.:aimeeyork |
can someone post a pic of their silver yorkie?:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
mickey is silver and blonde and black and he is the cutest little boy in the world:D |
Max's coat changes, at the moment he's tan, champagne, black and grey, but the black and grey mix looks blue. He's as colourful as his nature lol. Sorry, I just adore him.:aimeeyork |

i didnt buy a yorkie the other day cause the female was blonde and had floppy ears , just didnt seem like a yorkie to me. was worried that the mother was a mix. she was pretty tall too |
My Daisy is blonde on her head and very silvery/gray on her back. She's also very tall and weighs nearly 9 lbs. She's not anywhere near standard. We adore her. |
