Maggy May, I Don't Understand!!

I've been so tired since Maggy's May's spay, I don't even know how much sleep I've had this past week but I know it's not been a lot. Trying to take care of Maggy May and trying to be there for my husband and family since my husbands brother passed away this week has been stressful. After Maggy's incision came open, I decided to confine her to her kennel pretty much (only allowing her out to potty on her puppy pad & to walk over to her food and water dish if she chose to that I have outside her kennel.) I have have a food and water dish inside her kennel as well. She's been doing fine, finally started having formed bowel movements but wasn't drinking as much as she normally did before her spay, so I made sure to give her some water with a lil kayro mixed in throughout the day. I've had to do a lot of running with my husband these past two days for funeral arrangements and trying to get everything ready for the funeral tomorrow morning and I've had my daughter or one of my sons to stay in my room with Maggy May while I'm gone to keep an eye on her and make sure she's ok. I was up till 8 something this morning and when I was finally able to go to sleep, my hubby would come in and out of my room and let Maggy go potty and give her some water & put her back in her kennel. Well, about a half hour ago, she had diarrhea in her onesie! My son said he came in to check on her and found it. I don't know if she ate some of it or what, but she's now puking! I'm panicing worrying about her getting hypoglycemic. She puked about 4 times in a row. I rubbed some kayro on her gums, cleaned her up and she's now laying here on my lap taking it easy. I don't understand why she got sick, she was fine when I finally laid down this AM. It's been 6 days since her spay, did any of your furkids who were spayed ever get sick like that 6 days after they were spayed? She doesn't want any food or water now, I tried but she doesn't want it. I'll wait for a bit and let her tummy settle and then try again. Any ideas on why she'd get sick like that? It's been one thing after another lately and now I'm worried if she doesn't get better today I'll have to miss Kenny's funeral tomorrow. I know I've asked for so many prayers lately & you all have given them so much and so willingly, but I'm asking if you'd say a prayer for Maggy today that she'll start eating and drinking and be ok so I can go to Kennys funeral tomorrow morning. It's gonna be the hardest day for my husband and I really want to be there for him as well as pay my last respects to Kenny. Thanks in advance everyone.

Poor baby... she just had major surgery (blessings for having her spayed!) I don't know where you live, but where I am, it's nasty hot! Those factors will put ANY dog off their food! Let her rest up from the surgery and see if she doesn't perk up and want to eat. In the meantime, you could try coaxing her with a bit of cottage cheese or a scrambled egg. It's important that she drink very important, whether she feels like eating or not. If you can't convince her, you might be forced to use a syringe to dribble the water in her mouth.
Good Luck! Hope she's feeling MUCH better by the time she goes to the vet!! Sending prayers for you and yours! You are having a very hard week but remember after the storm comes the calm.

I wish i had some useful advice to give you..I feel helpless! I would say keep offering the food now and again, maybe just mild stuff like chicken & Rice or scrambled egg and get her to the vet as soon as you have the time..whens she go in for the stitches out?..hows her incision looking? It's a bit of a puzzle really.. does she seem ok in herself? quieter than normal? I hope someone has better advice than me..:(
Thanks for asking after Pixie..she's doing great..its only day 2 (spayed friday) and you would think she hadn't had anything done...she has wanted to play occasionally so i'm trying not to excite her too much..she has been in the garden as it was a nice day today and it seemed a shame to keep her in. She has her check up tomorrow..and her stitches out on the 25th.
I will be thinking of you tomorrow..take care ((((HUGS))));)

Well, it'd be nice to sum it up to the heat, but, with all the problems she's had in her short lil life, I won't take her outside to potty while she's healing, don't wanna take any chances, so she's been going potty on her puppy pads and our house is air conditioned so I know she's not over heated. I've been making sure she gets enough to drink, I've been giving her water as well with Kayro mixed in when I feel she hasn't been drinking enough. I just wished she'd be ok and get over this hump.

Maggy didn't have sutures on the outside, they used surgical clue. Her incision is looking really good though, no redness or anything. Boy Pixie sure bounces back quick! I'm really glad to hear she's doing so well, that's GREAT news!

Oh yes..silly me..she had the glue didn't she..

Good to hear the incision looks good..Pixie has been going outside in the garden..she's not running around too much so i don't mind..but it does worry me that her incision might get infected or something..I keep checking it and it is tiny! it looks very neat & clean..so i'm happy.
Yes, she recovered so fast! I didn't expect that with her being such a little thing! by the next day it was almost like nothing had happened to her.
You seem to be doing all the right things with maggie..and i'm pretty sure that she will be 100% pretty soon..its just awful timing for you with all the other stresses going on right now..hang in there hun..we are here for you..even if some of us are thousands of miles away!;)

Thank you so much for the replies and support, I really do appreciate it. I'm at my wits end here and ready to either rip my hair out or just sit down and bawl. Maggy had the runs again earlier but hasn't had them for about 2 hours now. However, I was laying on my bed with her to keep her calm and warm and she fell asleep. After she fell asleep I thought, crap, I should have put a puppy pad under her just in case. She was already sleeping though and I didn't want to disturb her so I just laid there with her. Well, about two minutes later, I regretted that choice. She puked all over my pillow, my blankets and my sheet. I hurried and got her down to the puppy pad and by then she was done. She walked over and got a lil water and I had to put her in her kennel while I got everything off the bed and had my son throw stuff in the wash. Has to throw her bed and blankies and one onesie in the wash cause she had the runs on it earlier today. I decided to leave a onesie off her for the time being cause when she needs to have the runs, there's no time to get it undone and rolled up. I had my older son run down and get me some boneless skinless chicken breast and some rice, I cooked that up and gave her a wee bit, so far she'd keeping it down and is back on my lap. I hope she's gonna be ok and I hope she shows marked improvement here tonight, I don't want to miss Kennys funeral and my husband really needs me with him. I don't feel right asking one of my kids to miss there uncles funeral and stay with Maggy so I can go ether. Needing some big time prayers here tonight....

Is she on an NSAID for pain relief (rimadyl/caprofen, Metacom)?

mscat 07-13-2008 03:59 PM

Not any longer. She as on rimadyl for 2 days after her spay, (1 piece/pre-cut/ once a day, but she hasn't had that now for 4 days. She isn't on anything else.

Well, those symptoms are strange then.
Maybe a virus?

I have no clue.... I wonder if stress can do this kind of thing to a furkid? I know she's not been happy not being able to be out of her kennel as much. It took her 4 days to have a regular BM and then when her incision came open and I confined her, I know that made things slow down in her system as well by not being able to really be up and moving about. She's used to being with me most all the time, so she's had a lot to say about being in her kennel healing.

Patti 07-13-2008 04:36 PM

I am so sorry she is not feeling well. I would be concerned that she has an infection if she keeps up with the diahrrea and vomiting. Are there any ER 24 hour vets you could call and just ask if this is something to worry about 6 days post spay. Hoping she feels better tomorrow. I feel so bad for you.

Well I would have already done that, but from prior occasions, I know that the ER vet won't give any info over the phone. I've tried before and they won't tell me anything, just, "you'll have to bring them in." Well, so far she's kept the rice and chicken down and she drank a lil more water on her own. If she had any sort of infection from her spay, wouldn't it be showing signs on the outside of her incision as well? it looks good, no redness or swelling.

Poor Maggy May :( what's wong with you little punkin?? :( You know Tracy, I wondered about the stress factor too. With all your family has gone thorugh the past week and her spay maybe the stress could be too much for her and this is how she is reacting. Maybe she is sensing things. I really don't know?? If I didn't have my sons kindergarten physical tomorrow and needing to go see my Dad, I would offer to come up and sit with her during Kenny's funeral for you. :)
I hope you get everything figured out with Maggy, I'm ready to hear about her getting back to her regular self again :)
You know my pm too if you need to talk : :)

Awe Erin, you're so sweet ((((Erin)))) That's very kind of you and I appreciate the thought. I'm thinking if all else fails and she isn't feeling better by morning, I'll see if the vet can keep her while I go to the funeral, it's worth a shot and she'd be in a good place should she start getting sick again. She's not had the runs anymore and hasn't vomited, she's still keeping the chicken with rice down so that's a good sign. I know when I'm stressed, I get the runs myself, so maybe it is possible for our furkids as well. I know she can sense there's something not right, and then her being confined to her kennel isn't making it any easier on her either, well not in the sense that she wants to be right with me. It's good for her to get rest and let her incision and insides heal though. This lil girl has worried me more in the short time we've had her then all three of our other big furkids put together in the whole time we've had them!

andibaby 07-13-2008 05:40 PM

Sending lots of prayers and healing thoughts your way for your family and Maggy May. Hopefully you can get some much needed rest soon.

Beabble 07-13-2008 07:01 PM

Well, I took Maggys temp and it's normal, it's 100.5 so I don't think she's got any sort of infection. She's not had the runs or puked anymore either, hopefully she'll continue to improve.

Thank you Maya, those are pretty special hugs cause so far, Maggy May hasn't gotten sick or had the runs anymore. She kept the chicken and rice down that I gave her and has drank water on her own as well. Waiting for her to go potty this AM to see how it is but so far, things are looking promising. Thank you all so much for all the prayers, God must be hearing them and answering them cause so far she's doing really good!!

im sorry she is not feeling well! :( keep nutra-cal on hand.. Good Luck & i hope she feels better, so you can go to the funeral! :( xoxo

nvnvgirl 07-14-2008 01:02 PM

Tracy~ I hope Maggy's feeling better each day and that you were able to get to the funeral.
Sometimes it's a combination of the anesthesia and the pain meds that slows down the bowel and it takes awhile of activity and regular food to get them back on track. Also, my vet told me that if they're tolerating food, to let them eat a decent amount (meaning, don't limit it to several small meals) of food so that they had some bulk in the intestines to form stool instead of just small amounts that sort of dribbles thru. I was worried about the same thing after Max's neuter and sure enough, he finally did have a normal formed BM. I'm sure, along with feeling the sadness there recently that it's got her feeling a little unsure of what's going on so that probably just contributes to it.

I'm sure she's gonna be A-OK in a few days.

Take care of yourself and your hubby and I hope Maggy's better as I type this!

yorkieusa 07-14-2008 01:17 PM

I hope she's gonna be alright. I suppose it could be the stress of the change in her routine and being confined. I don't really know. I'm praying for her and you all, too.

chachi 07-14-2008 01:30 PM

I am praying for Maggie May and you also
