Nutracal??? What is this and do I need to get some? |
Yeah, it's always good to keep if you ever need it. Yorkies get hypoglycemic easily from going into a new home and not eating, playing for long periods of time and using too much energy, stress and some other things. You can give them the Nutrical or Karo Syrup but you definitely need to give them one if you notice a change in their behavior. |

I've been looking for the Puppy Nutrical for the passed few days and both Petco & Petsmart are sold out....so it must be good. Is it something that they like the taste of....do you just put it on your finger and they lick it off? I'm picking up a new pup at the airport this week and want to be sure I know what I am doing....thanks!:):aimeeyork |
well my little guy must be strange..cuz he wont eat it...so I have to put it on my fingertip and put it on the roof of his mouth,,but most pups like it....you deff want to have it on hand...espically if your pup gets days that he wont eat like mine does,,,he is just sooo pickey...and there are days that decides he dont like his puppy food and he just wont eat it..so i give him a little nutri-cal to keep his stregnth up and his sugar from droping, |
There is no reason to give Nuti-cal or Karo Syrup unless you think they are experiencing hypoglycemia. Sugar isn't good for them, but sometimes puppies or dogs under 3 pounds have episodes of hypoglycemia, and need some sugar in their blood fast. You can even cause an episode of hypoglycemia by giving too much Nutr-Cal, so don't use it unless it's needed. When sugar enters the bloodstream, insulin is produced, unless their is sufficient protein to stabilize the insulin, another attack of hypoglycemia will result. I've had great success with Nutrical since Tetley is a very picky eater. I found that a little bit of Nutrical would boost his appetite so he'd eat his dinner (if he hadn't eaten in 24 hrs). Now that he's older I haven't had to use it in a long time. But I would highly recommend you get some for your new arrival. If the store doesn't carry Nutrical, there are a few other brands on the market that do the same thing. What you're looking for is a High Calorie Dietary Supplement. Good luck! |
When Baron was young (under 6 months old) I always had it around. (the breeder sent him home with Karo syrup). Especially liked it for any kind of travel, I'd give him a tiny bit every few hours to make sure he wouldn't go hypoglycemic. But a little really goes a LONG way. ~I had a puppy with renal failure who refused to eat and went hypoglycemic, so I'm ultra-cautious now. But Nancy1999 brought up a very important point, too much sugar can be just as dangerous. So only use it if your puppy isn't eating regularly and watch the quantity.
