How do you get them to like being groomed? I have always taken my furbabies since they were a couple of months old to petsmart to get groomed but I have noticed that, When I try to groom them they have fits! and fight me tooth and nail they will not let me comb their hair let alone do their nails. So there I go and take 5 dogs every other month to go get groomed at 40 dollars a dog. I am thinking of taking grooming classes It will save me lots and lots of money. Any ideas anyone? |

You should message Sue, she is a great resource here on YT. Her user name on YT is SueNCricket 2....she is a groomer in the Mid West and has a wonderful dvd that she sales about how to groom your pup at home. I have it and it is wonderful. I still have to get the majority of the supplies but I highly recommend it. She will have lots of advice and tips on how to get started. Good Luck! |
For me it was a struggle until I bought my grooming table. With five it just isn't an option to take them all to the groomer. I raised all of them from puppies and started working with them early to accept grooming. In the beginning I treat while grooming, only when they stand still and let me work. Later I treat less and praise more. Grooming sessions should be kept as short as possible in the beginning. After they get the idea this is going to happen with or without their cooperation...it gets easier. Now my girls will sometimes go to sleep and almost fall over while I'm working on them. It's important that they not sense frustration on your part, if you feel it they will know it so just stop and come back to it later. Good luck !! :D |
5 will be alot of work.. but once you have it down im sure it will be fine! do little bits at a time.. and be consistent!! don't let them have their way if they dont want to be groomed.. you have to teach them they must do this.. after a couple times they will get the swing of things.. and of course treats to let them know they did a good job, always help! ;) you tube has some videos on grooming, you may want to check that out! ;) (and there is a sticky in the grooming forum.. that (Marcerella02) posted that shows how to groom each part of your yorkie. ;) |
Thanks I was on pet edge catalog and am going to order their set its a table and chair and station that holds all the items you need for grooming. I figure its quite a bit of money but nothing compared to what i would be paying out yearly. and I'll have my very own grooming station in my basement.:D:D |
I found too they are muxh better when on a grooming table. Even my Pom who will snap at me will let me do her nails and brush her a bit when on the stand. I also keep a CC pin brush by me and when the girls are relaxing I will pick one up and lay her on my legs on her back and gently brush and massage them. They love it. I also groom them every night startign at 9 pm when they are sleepy and do one after the other and it takes me about 30-45 minutes depending on if trimming is needed. With 4 I can't afford taking them to a groomers. |
