Bathing???? Hello All. My question is how often and with what is best for their coat and skin? Kasey LIKES to be dirty. She discovered dirt is for digging and mud is for playing in! The books seem to be all over the place on this question. Thanks in advance. |
Welcome to YT! You're safe to bathe once per week at the minimum, or every 3-4 days if you feel you need to as long as you make sure the products you are using don't irritate or dry the skin. The essential oils on the skin keep it healthy as well as the hair follicles themselves. You may want to keep a dry bath product on hand for in between baths. I use Plush Puppy products on my two show puppies, and Suave Coconut shampoo/conditioner in one for the others. It's important not to put shampoo on or scrub the skin, concentrate on the coat. Dilute the shampoo and be sure to rinse well. :animal-pa |
This was one of the first questions I asked my wonderful vet when I became a new puppy owner! His answer was - as often as he needs. Should he get dirty, give him a bath! There are loads of extra moisturizing products (I like products with shea butter and soothing oatmeal) on the market if you end up becoming a frequent bather, like me. (2-3 times a week) an added benefit of bathing often is that you keep killing live fleas, should any hop on and become very familiar with your poochies anatomy so you notice if anything changes or is odd. Having 'wipes' available is great for dirty paws and faces or those days when you just dont have the energy to bathe and blow dry. Blow drying is important b/c wet fur can cause yeasty, itching skin. So make sure your baby is ALL the way dry!! (A really famous groomer told me that) |
Once a week for us, sometimes more often if they stink or roll in bugs or bird poop or whatever. Sammy also pukes sometimes when her tummy is empty and the only way to remove that smell from her beard is to dunk her. Gotta love 4am baths! We use Buddy Wash - LOVE IT! Buddy Splash and Growl & Meow for in between. We do faces & eye goobers every day, teeth every other day or at least on bath day and paws/butts as needed. Usually by the time the paws are crusty and the butts are stinky it's bath day anyway. Mine go to the groomer every 4-6 weeks but they are cut short and grow out quickly. I can and have done it myself but I love my groomer so we just go there. :D |
Just a side note - we love Harry Barker shampoo/conditioner and SheaPet brand. Gotta love a stinker! :p It was (another) bath night at my house tonight! |
