Why is the Yorkie a toy?? Why is the Yorkshire Terrier in the toy, rather than the terrier group? From the AKC... Terrier - This group includes breeds such as the Airedale, Cairn Terrier and Scottish Terrier. Terriers were bred to rid property of vermin such as rats. Toy - These dogs were bred to be household companions. This group includes little dogs such as the Chihuahua, Maltese, Pomeranian and Pug. AKC MEET THE BREEDS®: Yorkshire Terrier "Though members of the Toy Group, they are terriers by nature and are brave, determined, investigative and energetic." Just curious...Never knew the answer. |

Good Question ..... I have no clue why ..... |
I came across something earlier that sd the dogs in the terrier group were breed for specific jobs where the toy breeds were more for pets. That toy dogs were traditionally pampered and treasured by aristocracy around the world. From Yorkies - Yorkshire Terrier Dog & Puppies : "Toy Dog Breed Information Dogs in the Toy Group, which include the Yorkie or Yorkshire Terrier, were initially developed to ease the lifestyle and provide pleasure to rich people. These dogs were initially owned by the wealthy and were viewed by others as status symbols - a luxury item with little apparent purpose. Dogs in other groups had specific working roles and played a major part in providing food for the table and therefore justified the cost of their upkeep and care - these were the dogs which were commonly owned by the lower classes. Changes in the economy, lifestyles, living conditions and the environment brought the luxury and pleasure of owning a toy breed dog, such as the Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkies), to everyone." |
I did some reasearch a while back for a presentation in one of my classes. The "Grandfather" of all Yorkies (Huddersfiled Ben) won many competitions for "ratting" as well as in dog shows. The Yorkie was bred as a ratter, used to kill fox and rats in small places. There is some evidence that they may have been used for hunting as well. Like most terriers developed in the early 19th Century, it was common for Yorkies to demonstrate their prowess as vermin killers in what were known as "rat killer" It looks like to me that they could be in either group. |
I've wondered the same thing when I was watching Dog Shows... |
Yorkies were originally bred to exterminate rats and vermin for the "commoners" that, by law, were not allowed to have big dogs. The only size dog they could have was one that could jump through a 7 inch hoop. So the Yorkie was developed. It wasnt until the victorian era that they became the lap dog of royalty. They loved that metallic blue coat!! Ever since, they started to be bred more for lap dog purposes than hunters. |
