Pet Store Yorkies? Did you get your Yorkie at a pet store? If you did, did you find any training issues with it? This isn't a thread to discuss why you shouldn't buy one at a pet store. We all know the answer to that. This is just a thread to discuss what training pitfalls there may be with dogs already purchased from a pet store. |
ok the truth is we got our first yorkie bandit form a pet store. he came with NO training AT ALL!!!!!! they have this free training thing for the rest of the dogs life, yea a lot of good that does. someone we know who got their dog from there came back for the training. it turns out that the trainer is some 17 year old who has NO IDEA what he's doing. so baiscally ALL we got was dissapointment. and then after that, we couldn't teach him ANYTHING! it was almost like he couldn't pay attention and couldn't remember anything, i felt bad for him. |
My westie came from a pet store and she is soooo smart. She can learn new tricks so quickly. If you are talking POTTY training, I think there may be issues since pet stores usually allow puppies to soil their beds and so puppies who may have originally or through instinct known to keep their beds clean will lose that and "learn" that they can eliminate anywhere. It is always easier if a puppy is taught from the very beginning that there is a separate place to go to eliminate to keep their "houses" and their beds clean. |
My mom's 1st pomeranian came from a pet store and she has had potty training issues her entire life. She is almost 12 years old. It's very sad. |
It is not hard to think that petstore puppies will have, lets say, hygiened issues:) Their learn from their mommies and most and taken away way too young:( |
I know several people who bought from pet stores not knowing any better at the time - and have many issues - training included...they love their dogs but would never go to a pet store again (Thank you!) and also now know WHY they shouldn't. |
I too am one of the many that didn't know anything at the time about puppymills, brokers etc. But I did buy my first Purebred Yorkie from a PetStore. To this day, she is one of the brightest out of my three. She learns very easily, is very sweet natured and very calm. I don't regret buying her at all, maybe from the place I got her.. which that is a totally different story :thumbdown .. but I love her! |
We bought Dudley at a pet store. He had Kennel cough and they wouldn't release him until we signed a contract to take him to the vet. The woman was very worried about the puppy because he was so little but he did fine. We love him and trained him pretty easily. He is very smart and beautiful. Of course we wouldn't buy another from the pet store now, because I have been reading about puppy mills, but not because he was inferior. |
Thank God that these pet store puppies went to good homes where they are loved unconditionally! The lesson about petshops was learned but at the end having our furry babies love is what really matters:D |

He was born in a Puppy Mill - sold to Hunte Corp., the biggest broker in the country, and shipped in a semi-truck to the Pet Store.....it easily could have been from transportation...- overheating - starving ...or lack of medical care from birth that he is the way he is now. Once sold... this little yorkie was on his own....My friend is his angel and he is hers but she holds the Pet Store responsible for the problems he has - He\'s lived 6 months longer than they originally thought ....but every day my friend knows this could be the day she has to make a very very hard decision. |
I got Toffee from a pet store and I haven\'t had any problems with training like potty training, basic cues like "sit" "stay" "come". I\'m not quite sure he knows his name yet though... :D He\'s one wonderful puppy. |
Thank you for all of your replies. Potty training was something that I heard was difficult because of how they are raised. Of course, I\'ve also heard that with small bladders it can take up to a year to potty train and that, even then, they may still have accidents in the house. What do you all think about the socialization aspects? |
If it makes you feel better - Potty training is hard for some yorkies PERIOD. lol ...LOTS that didn\'t come from a pet store have issues ...my Cheri was 11 months old before she finally got it. MY oldest Chanel trained in less than 2 weeks on a pad - same training - 2 different results. |
Thanks red98vett, it actually does make me feel a little less like a failure. |
