Ok Let's Hear It.... I will be driving to San Francisco tomorrow to pick up my new little yorkie. I am so excited I can't sleep! I have an 8 1/2 month old boy yorkie who will take on the roll of big brother. I need to know what to expect and how to best prepare for having two vs one. I have a crate all set up that belongs to my first yorkie....is it best to have 2 crates? Derby sleeps with me at night but is fully crate trained and he does go in the crate when I leave for my workouts and so forth. Is that exclusively his then? And pup should have his own? How does it work when the older yorkie is in bed sleeping with you and the new pup is being crate trained at night? Any problems or stories that anyone has to share?....I can just imagine the pup crying and Derby barking or wanting to go to the pup and me getting zero sleep. Ha! Funny how that is my biggest worry....the night time routine. Anything else you would like to share with me about going from one to two to make the transition easier for everyone.....please share.:):animal36:animal36 |
Do you have a backyard? Introduce them outside of the house initially if possible. Show more attention to Derby than puppy. Yes, puppy should have his own crate. Derby's is Derby's domain... With an 8 month old...I really don't think you'll have much of an adjustment between the two. Derby is gonna love having a playmate. Just be sure for a little while to give Derby lots of attention. Ramsey was "first"...she got the first treat, she was let out...first. Now it doesn't matter who is first... At my house...Ramsey and Reese slept in our bed....Reggie was confined to an x pen. Reggie cried...Ramsey and Reese paid him no attention. I did...ME. Before a week was out...Reggie was in the bed too. |
Well congratulations!! I don't have any suggestions except just treat him just as you did the first one. I'd take Deerby with you so they can get to know each other in the car on the way back. I'd keep the new baby in a crate though. I just know it's all going to be just fine. :) |
Congratulations on getting the new puppy, how exciting for you, I agree a puppy needs his own crate, but it doesn't need to be a big one if he will graduate to your bed anyway, and sometimes the smaller ones are better for training anyway. Joey's crate was so big that he would just poop on one end and sleep on the other end, so we starting letting him sleep in his car-seat bed, which was much smaller, and this helped with training. Soon he was ready for our bed. Eight months seems like a perfect time to introduce a new puppy, and Derby will probably help his little brother with the potty training. Is your new puppy a boy or girl? |
Be prepared to have clean up supplies for on the drive home. My puppy got car sick 3 times on the long drive. Congradulations on your new Yorkie:thumbup: baby! |
Congratulations again Paulette!!!!!!!!!! I am soooo excited for the Derbster and you:D;)!!:happyboun:yay_jump::yay_jump:: |

Thank you so much! I hadn't thought of all of the "being first" issues. Yes. That all makes perfect sense now. Derby was first so therefore when there is a second pup he needs reassurance that he is still first. Got it. And here I was worried about me needing reassurance that I was still first with Derby. LOL! Thanks again.:) |
