Backyard Breeders/Reputable Breeders What are the specific differences? I just thought we should get the opinions on this in one place so people looking can have a heads up. I didnt know anything about this until after I got my yorkie and joined yorkietalk. The only thing I knew before was to not buy from pet shops because of mills. I suspect I may have gotten my sweetie from a byb, but Im not exactly sure. |
Your are right not to buy from Pet Stores, but puppy mills also sell to puppy brokers who have web sites, the Humane Society recommends that no one buy their puppy from a web site. You need to see for yourself the condition in which the puppy's mother and father live, that's the only way we can really help stop the suffering of so many dogs. Here's a link which explains the differences between a byb and a reputable breeder, to me, the main difference is that the reputable breeder is actually trying to improve the breed, while the backyard breeder is trying to earn a few extra bucks. Oh boy, you've opened up a can of worms with this topic as there are some very different and passionate opinions on this forum, when talking about the differences. IMO, a byb is breeding for the money primarily. Some byb's will try to appear reputable by saying they don't do it for the money and only for the love of the breed, but it's rarely the truth in my experience. I know very few reputable byb's. Most of the reputable breeders I'm aware of are exhibitor/breeders. Although, I'm aware of some that I don't consider so reputable. Nancy - that is a good link to describe the difference - thanks! |
Nancy- Thats an awesome link! Thanks. It explains a lot. |
I know with me I have only lost touch with one of the puppies I placed. One of my fur grandbabies is deceased and so is his mom. I still babysit for 5 of our puppies the oldest being 4 this December 27th. I know all the names, birthdates, and families of my puppies. I actually purchased back on of my babies at 8 months old. She is now in a new forever home and truely happy. I truely love the Yorkie breed and now have Biewers and would like to show someday after I retire. A backyard breeder doesn't care what happens after they get the money. |
