hairs today, gone tomorrow? Hello to the community. Happy to have found you-all. I'm a first time yorkie-owned person. Whew. What a bundle of energy and love. I have two questions. My yorkie is a new addition to the family and is an adorable 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 year old. She has her own way to go and her own habits, most of them bad. We live in the country and when I take her out to potty ( she was not housetrained and basically found running free for over a week). Anyway if I don't stay with her every step, she's off and running. I have to put her harness and leash on and then she acts like she is being punished. She pulls and fights the leash. That is definitely a problem since the coyotes might have a snack. Yikes. What should I do? Just persevere? My other question is not critical but more curious. She has very very thick bristly black hairs ( almost quill-like) mixed in with her facial hair around her mouth area. What is the purpose of these hairs? And will they eventually go away as she gets older? Well thanks for reading this post and hope you weren't too bored. Sincerely, tessa2005 |
Welcome to YT!!! We love having new members. Sounds like your baby is going through what all of ours are either still going through, or have gone through in the past. I would say stay consistent and continue doing what you're doing even if it doesn't seem to make a difference right away..We like to see lots of pictures here on YT, so get to postin'..hehe |

to get her used to the harness and leash you can put them on while in the house and just let her drag the leash around and carry on as she does. the bristly hairs on her face are whiskers. they wont go away. you can trim them though. |
Is it possible for you to install at least a chain link fence for her so she can be somewhat free? As for the "whiskers" as I call them, I don't know what they are for. Every dog I've ever had has had them. But my yorkies weren't that noticeable, I suppose, because of their long hair. Sometimes you'll find one of them in their beds! :D |
Thanks all of you. :) I've never owned such a small dog and she can be so stubborn and loving too. For some reason, she likes to lay on my feet when I sit down. She makes me laugh. She licks the cat's faces and wants to play with them so she is fitting in with my other pets. I tried putting her in a fenced area but she cried to get out so she could play with the other dogs I have. It was too sad to hear these little yips. So I just stay with her and hope she potties before we go back inside .....Sorry my cat is in my lap and just put her paw on the keyboard. Aren't animals cute? ouch! cept for the claws. Thanks for the replie s I gotta get this cat down ;) |
Just keep working on the harness and lead every day, she'll come around eventually, though it will take awhile since you are not training, but re-training. Keeping treats in your pocket is a big help. A cheerio for each step in the right direction seems to work pretty fast for mine. Plus they really focus on you if you are the one with the goodies. Best of luck and welcome! |
Welcome to YT. Everyone has giving you good advise. Be patience and consistent. Looking forward to see pics of your little one. Good luck. |
Welcome to YT!! We are glad you found us.. we just love hearing stories and of course sharing pics of our babies.. Hope you share those with us soon.. ;) I guess I dont have to mention the bristly hairs.. that was already taken care of.. and so was the harnesses issue... I would just perservere as well... She will get use to it.. Ellie my oldest girl.. is great for her walks but in the back yard she is such a brat and still pulls or will sit still and not budge.. Again, glad you found YT and I look forward to hearing more about your little Furbaby.. |
