AKC v. ACA
 
I was wondering if anybody had any knowledge about the American Canine Association. My mom bought a Yorkie that was supposed to be AKC, but is really ACA. :animal36

You might want to check out this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ersus-akc.html. It's basically the same for all the other registries. This doesn't mean that your dog isn't every bit as good as a dog registered by the AKC, some of us just feels like the AKC does a better job at regulating breeders. Basically anybody can start a registry, and many registries will accept any dog.

Thanks for getting back to me! The owner advertised that the puppy was AKC and then sent ACA papers, which makes her suspicious. Would you have any idea why someone would do something like that?

Thank you so much for getting back to me! The owner advertised our puppy as AKC, but then sent ACA papers, which makes us suspicious. Would you have any idea why someone would do this or have you ever heard of this before?

Cost.... It is usually cheaper to register with a registry other than AKC.

I think if they were bought from a pet store, it might be a puppymill dog. That is what our new dog Gracie is, ACA. The lady we bought her from said she didn't realize until we were buying her. (Yeah sure) When I looked up her breeder in MO., I knew she was puppymill. AKC I believe inspects breeders and if they have too many dogs they won't allow them. I think it is easier for the puppymillers to go with another registry.

Some puppies aren't eligible for the AKC because there is no proof that they are pure blood, other's aren't eligible because the breeder didn't have breeding rights meaning he bought a AKC puppy without breeding rights and bred him anyway. Other breeders have been thrown out for breaking rules on record keeping; others are thrown out for having kennels that don't meet certain standards. There are probably other reasons as well, but the actual price of AKC isn't that different from the other registries, and sometimes breeders just use price as an excuse why they didn't register. I think one breeder was saying it was only $30.00 to register a whole litter with the AKC, although some registries do charge nothing, and make up for that if the puppy buyer registers the puppy. Registering a puppy with the AKC costs $20.00 for the puppy owner, so I don't think the price difference is the reason, as an AKC puppy will usually sell for more. It simply a matter of the dog being eligible or not, the price is very little, whereas, other registries any dog can be registered for the right price.
