Hair Brushing? How do you get an 8 week old to sit for hair brushing? Are there any tricks to this? |
That is really young to expect them to sit for anything! :):) But the earlier you get them used to it, the better. Start by just introducing him/her to the brush. Use the back side of it, let her sniff it, rub it on her paw for a second (the back side) give her a treat for accepting it. They aren't going to sit for a long time, once you get him/her used to it, then brush for a minute or less than give him or her a break. Do short sessions each day, (he head, the back, one leg, etc) even if they don't need to be brushed, and before you know it, you'll be doing her whole body and both he/she and you will be used to it and it will be a breeze to do! Welcome to YT :) |
Mufasa is 15 weeks old and he still doesn't like to be brushed. We keep doing it hoping one day he'll just learn to love it. lol |
At 8 weeks, your puppy is now getting some adult hair trying to come in and mingle with the puppy coat. They can turn into a real mess if you don't stay on top of it. I think the best tool to use at this point is a metal comb. It does a better job of getting all the way to the skin. You need to do this or you may find little mats forming close to the skin and then you've got real problems. Puppies don't like to sit still but if you try grooming at a time when he's all played out and kind of mellow, it'll be easier. If he wants to play a bit and bite at the comb, that's fine...just get back to the job after a minute. The areas around the shoulder, behind the ears and on the haunches are the ones to tangle easiest so it's best to groom every day. They don't tangle as bad as they age and they shed their puppy coat. After combing with a coarse tooth comb, I like to go over them with a flea comb. It helps to pull more of the puppy down out. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
You might try having a treat in your hand ( maybe a few) and offer her them as you are brushing her. Jeter was only 9 weeks old when I got him and I started to brushed him daily from day one of bringing him home. He doesn't mind it now ( he is now 9 months old) he hates getting the bath and HATES the blowdryer too:rolleyes: |
The sooner you start with brushing the better it is... i got him on my hand en i brushed him right away.. :) Every day 1 or 2 times for a few littl emin and make it longer every time.. and also give him a treat when he is or she is a good boy or good girl :) Good luck ! :) love Priscilla and Snickers ;) |
i put chloe on my lap and i put a bunch of cheerios on my leg and she munches away while i brush her she doesnt even notice! |
oh and i also call her a pretty girl a million times while im doing it :p |
Great Advice from everybody so far .... start it as soon as possible or it will end in a daily WAR !!! Trust me I speak out of experience !!! Treats do the Trick afterwards .... :D Good Luck !!! |
