Sleeps Thru The Night I need all you experienced yorkie owners opinion. I have had my new puppy for 3 days. The first night she cried twice & I took her out to go potty. The last 2 nights she slept straight thru till morning without any accidents in crate. I take her out first thing & she piddles. I am going back to work on Wednesday and a neighbor will be letting her out in the middle of the day. I am thinking she might do pretty good fwith bladder control if she is making it thru the night. Am I being too hopeful or is this a good sign? |
How old is your Pup? And congratulations on your new baby.... |
Oh yea, I forgot that important detail! 8 weeks |
My Mufasa is 15 weeks old and when I get up in the night to go potty I always take him out to go potty. I don't think he could hold it all day though. At least not at this point. |
Keelyn has started sleeping through the night (12-7/730am)...I have had her for 3 weeks. But during the day she doesn't have as much control it seems, and goes a lot more. |

Hi congrats on your new baby,I think she is tooo young to control herself for so long. |
:aimeeyork Potty training takes time. Let your new puppy get settled in her new place, and then be very patient, and consistent with her. Reward her when she does go potty in the right place. :aimeeyork |
Let me explain some more. Her crate is aside of our bed. The first night she cried at 1:50 & I took her out. Then she cried at 4:45 and I took her out. The last 2 nights she did not cry at all. I don't expect her to hold her urine all day when I go back to work. A neighbor, who has a carine terrier, will be letting her out in the middle of the day. I will be home at about 3:30 each day. She does relieve herself during the day many times. But I am thinking beings she does so well at night, leaving her like I plan will be OK. I guess I am just trying to justify my guilty conscience for not being a stay home mom. |
Murphy sleeps in a crate, he goes in around 9 or 10pm and usually lasts until 5:30 or 6am. While I am at work I baby gate him in the kitchen with pp pads. He 9 times out of 10 hits the pad. :) He is 6 months now, I got him at about 13 weeks. 8 weeks is pretty young and I don't have any experience with a puppy that little. Sounds like if she makes it through the night and it's only a couple of hours before your friend takes her out and then only a couple more before you get home, then that she may be okay, but I honestly don't know. Being so little her frequency may vary as she gets older and eats and drinks more. Hopefully someone will answer better for you. Congrats on your new addition. |
I also can put Mackensie in the kitchen, however I got her a permanent house training pad & she thinks it is to play with. I did not get a holder cause it's $25 & wanted to make sure she uses the pad first. This is what I would like her to use when we are not home & then put her outside when I am homel Some people say this will not work. I will buy more pads if she gets the hang of it. |

:animal-paI know the feeling. I work full time and do not have a husband or a roommate to help care for Scooter. The first time you leave them is so hard. Scooter is ten months old now and does great. I work about 15 minutes from my house so I come home and spend lunch with him. As long as someone is able to let your baby out on some sort of regular schedule, they adjust great. I don't use a crate with Scooter, he originally had a bathroom (with a puppy gate up instead of a closed door) and now has moved to using an xpen to keep him in my kitchen. I only leave him for about 4-5 hours at a time and he does quite well with it now. The beauty of giving him a room instead of a crate is that I had room for a puppy pad, his bed, a water bowl, and some toys. We have mastered potty training and he no longer needs the puppy pads. One thing you may want to consider is Doggie Daycare. I didn't want Scooter getting bored at home and there are days that I have lunch meetings or can't make it home to check on him. I now take him once or twice a week. The daycare is close to my office and they have extended hours. They take such good care of him and he is with dogs of similar size and temperment. He enjoys it so much that he starts barking at traffic if they aren't moving fast enough. He comes home so tired from a full day of play that he tends to fall asleep in my lap on the drive home. Daycare could be a great option so that you and your neighbor can have a little time to do other things. I think it is great that you have a neighbor willing to come over daily that you trust enough to get in your house and take care of your baby. You may also want to consider leaving puppy pads out for your baby as you continue potty training. Good luck. |
