CKC versus AKC I have another question in my search for a Yorkie pup. I am running into breeders who are AKC and some are CKC, what is the difference and is one better than the other? I know AKC is an older organization but have red flags about why some puppies are CKC versus the AKC? Thanks again, Michelle |
Hi Michelle, Welcome to YorkieTalk. I know it does get confusing, but there is a great deal of difference between the registries. After the AKC cracked down on breeders and puppy mills, many breeders had to leave and these alternative registries popped up. The AKC is the only registry that does routine, unannounced kennel inspections. They are also the only registry that does DNA testing. Assuming you mean the Continental Kennel Club and not the legitimate Canadian Kennel Club, the CKC requires no stipulation that the breeder has breeding rights when he registers the dog, and I find this extremely unethical. I also have a problem with the Continental Kennel Club choosing those initials because the Canadian Kennel Club has a good reputation, and is the AKC equivalent; I think those initials were chosen to mislead people, again just my opinion. This is not to say all AKC breeders are good, but for me it would be the first step in finding a good breeder. For more information see: About Dog Registries and Kennel Clubs |
Thank you, that link explained alot. I just had a red flag pop up when I started seeing CKC (continental not Canadian) on some breeders pages. I am sure there are great puppies registered with the CKC but why deviate from an organization that has been around for so many years? Thanks for the info:-) Michelle |

Continental (CKC) will register dogs without papers with photos and a signature. They also do not charge the breeder anything to "register" a litter. All costs are passed onto the new owner when they "register" the dog in their own name. IMO CKC is for people looking to cut costs, because they just care about making money. |
They register dogs without papers....so if I have a dog that looks like a Yorkie I can send in a picture of it and get it registered? That doesn't sound good at all. |
Yep! You don't even need any proof other than pictures and a signature from someone stating that it is a Yorkie. |
Go w/ AKC. IMO, CKC is a bunch of bull pooy! |
